Note To Self: Call First

All weekend long, we told the kids that we were going to take them here on Monday:

They got cowboy hats at church yesterday and Caroline was so excited to wear hers when we went to Tweetsie. We got up early on Monday, picked up Daddy at his office and headed up the mountain (2 hour trip) only to see this when we pulled off the highway:

No cars, no families, no train running, no ferris wheel turning. Nothing.

Yes, Mommy was the loser who SWORE Tweetsie was opened daily until August 28th! Apparently, it's only opened on the weekends now until Labor Day. There were big tears in the backseat of the car and Roy and I felt like the worst parents EVER! Good thing there are other fun things to do in Boone. We met Nana for lunch and headed on up to good 'ol Grandfather Mountain! Last time we were there it was pouring rain and we didn't get to do much. This time was better.

We got to see the bears this time and it was so cool. They were right in front of us and the kids got to feed them. RoyBoy loved it.

And this time we were really able to see the Otters play.

Caroline tried her hardest to get the attention of all the deer.

Us in front of the bear statues inside.

We ventured up to the top of Grandfather and crossed the bridge. This bridge is 1 mile high and it slightly swings when you walk across it.

It was a little cloudy today but the views were still gorgeous. We all hung on to RoyBoy for dear life up there! There are lots of rocks to climb and it's a LLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGG way down to the bottom of the mountain. My hands were sweaty!
So, we didn't make it to Tweetsie, but we will be back the first weekend of September to see it. Promises are promises!

Grandfather Mountain, such a nice place to visit. I will never forget when you took me and Maddie and Dan dan there. I think Dan Dan was Margaux's age.

Sorry that train thingy was closed, but you know what sweet girl, you go to Boone as much as we go to Disney. You will just have to do it again soon.

Oh my dear I look huge!!!!! Not a good picture---it is good I am the granny!!!! I had a great time. Thanks for coming. I love Grandfather but want to see the cougars..."no see all summer!" What is taking them so long to finish their habitat?

This reminds me of the movie Vacation! I'm glad you were able to find some other entertainment options.

I'm laughing at Tiger Dave's comment. I agree! It reminded me of "Vacation" too with Chevy Chase. Did you cue the Debbie Downer music with you pulled up? I would not want to have been in your car when you pulled up. Poor Caroline. I'm sure she had butterflies in her stomach and everything. NExt time for sure!

Looks like ya'll had a nice day anyway. I bet RA DID love feeding the bears. He cracks me up!

Oh my gosh, that so reminded me of the Vacation movie too! Empty parking lot and all - at least you didn't hold up the gate attendant with a bb gun and demand to go in! Glad you all made the best of it - Grandfather Mountain is great and it looks like you all had a great time.

Great recap. I am sorry Tweetsie was closed, but it sounds like you had a fabulous day. When we visited Boone I didn't go to Grandfather Mountain because of my fear of the bridge. I am TERRIFIED of things like that, but it looks great.

Definately sounds like the Vacation movie...Wally World. "Sorry folks the parks closed" That is the best movie. I can just imagine the look on everyones face when you pulled in the empty parking lot. Too funny. At least you made the best of it, Grandfather Mountain looks fun.

Oh no, Tweetsie closed on you. No fudge from the fudge shop? What a bummer! Well, it sounds like you turned a bad situation into a good one....good job, Donna!

Oh Donna! I just did this with all my kids but it was only to our neighborhood pool - and I felt like poop! How disappointing. I am glad you were able to salvage the trip. Good lessons for everyone.
