When I was little and my dad would be out of town, my sisters and I would argue over who got to sleep with my mom! Maybe not argue, but we would definitely try to be the first to ask for permission. It was a special treat to be the lucky one to sleep in her bed. Sometimes we'd even be able to watch television at night--in bed!! I even accepted Jesus into my heart one December night in Mom's bed when I was the chosen one! Roy is out of town, again, so last night I thought I'd give this old tradition a try. Let me start by saying that I have never enjoyed sleeping with Caroline. Every time I have slept with her, I wake up saying I'll never do it again. The last time I let her sleep with me was a year ago, so I thought maybe it would be better this time. Nope.
It was 8:00. She got her pajamas on, brought me about 5 books, brought her blankie and her new favorite sleep accessory (her piggy), and we climbed into the bed. I read her the books, we talked about our day, said our prayers and then she told me to go downstairs but to keep the bedside lamp on. 9:00 went by, then 10:00 arrived and she was still upstairs singing and reading books. I came to bed at 10:30 and she was still wide awake. I turned off the light. I don't know if it was the excitement of being in a new bed or what, but she kept sitting up in bed and looking at me. Do you know how creepy that is in the dark when all you can see is a little body and brown hair all in a face looking at you? I'd tell her to go to sleep and she would start patting my arm or back. Finally, she did. I soon regretted it.
She changed positions about every 3 seconds, came uncovered about 100 times, cried in her sleep about 4 times, talked outloud about 2 times, hit me in the face with her arm a few times. At one time I woke up and had her arm across my face with one of her legs across my body. Roy and I have a king size bed and I was on the edge of it the entire time, while my three year old princess was sprawled out in the middle. I snuck out of bed at 7:20 with a tight back after a terrible night sleep. I have a busy day and it's rainy outside. I'm just hoping for time for a nap today. Tonight, I am sleeping alone.

This cracks me up!!!! I tried to do the same thing a few weeks ago when Tig was out of town. By 2 am, I finally had to wake Layne up and tell him he had to go back to his bed. Luckily he didn't argue with me because he was half asleep! It's always a better idea when we think of it than how it actually turns out!!! Hope you can grab a nap today!
That's funny Donna. She was probably SOOOOOO excited that she got to sleep with her momma and was all giddy inside. hahahah! Maybe give it another year and then try it again.
By the way....Poor mom! I remember one time both of us won and got to sleep with her in her queen sized bed. I think she was smack in the middle with both of us on either side.
I can just picture it like a movie scene. She probably thought she was sooo cool!
Thanks for letting us stay with you this weekend, again! I enjoyed seeing Dolly and Dawn! Wish I saw them more!
That's hilarious! I love that she was patting you. She has probably never seen you sleep and was just curious about what you looked like. All my kids are hard to sleep with too but somehow I manage. Take a nap!
Poor, poor Don Don. One of my fav memories is that we would ALL sleep with my mom when my dad was outta town...not in the bed, though. One of us would either make a pallet or sleep on the couch in her room. Maybe Carol has restless leg syndrome. LOL... That plus you might be a light sleeper?
I hate when my kids sleep with me. I doesn't happen too often because Danny is not out of town that much- although he will be in a few weeks (along with Maddie and Danny at church camp---WhoooHoooo--Thank you JESUS!!!!!!!)
Dan Dan and Maddie, even Harry, are not that bad. I am just selfish and like the chance to relax in bed, by myself.
I believe last time I had someone sleep with me it was Maddie and we had the famous "Thank you Jamie Lynn Spears" talk/post.
Mom was for sure a good mom. She never had the chance to spend time alone. And she always had someone sleeping with her.
RLS----Hannah you are funny. Who would have thought to comment about Carol having RLS!!!!!! Still laughing!
Bless your heart Donna...you're sweet to give Caroline another shot even though your night didn't turn out so hot. Hope you got a nap!!! :)
Oh Donna, I feel like I could have written this post too. Why do we convince ourselves that maybe, just maybe, our child will lay still and sleep quietly next to us? The only good thing about sleeping with your child is waking up in the morning and seeing their sweet face...but, I'm thinking I'll walk to his bedroom every morning if I want to see that. :)
Anyway, I'm such a loser for not keeping up with all my favorite blog friends so it's taken me a few minutes this afternoon to read your posts. First off, LOVE your white dress that you wore on the 4th! You are one brave girl to wear that with 2 kiddos - how clean was it when you took it off that night? :)
It sounds like you guys are having a good summer and are having lots of visitors. Fun, fun! Are y'all going to the beach at all? You know you need to make it down to Charleston for some High Cotton! :)
You guys take care!
I can relate!! My (now )10 year old (she got a virus that attacked her heart at 8 mo. old and has a brain injury..just potty trained this year!) always had to be in our bed..but with the "I need your arm" request!! For years we slept in the most uncomfortable ways just to get SOME SLEEP. I would try to pretend I was asleep when she would wander into our room at 3am so that Daddy's arm would be the available one!!(though it was hard to pretend to be asleep when she bumped into the wall..she is visually impaired too!! :)
But, now...when it is time for bed..she says "I want to sleep in my cozy purple bed!" (and I am secretly glad!)
My oldest doesn't have a thing "wrong " with her and spent many nights in our bed too..but by the time #3 came along..she was in that crib (and I even had the guts to let her cry herself to sleep..but she was the best sleeper of them all!)
Hope tonight is a restful one...and you acn spread out!!
(We are still thrilled with all the sleep we are getting ...Lindsay has only been sleeping through the night for about 3 years! WHOOPIE!!)
and you ARE a great Mommy! :)
Donna, boy did I have a walk down memory lane as I was reading your post. Been there so many times and with the SAME result. Even this weekend, Mike and Parker were gone and Preston wanted to sleep with me. I told him he could use the Aerobed on the floor next to my bed but couldn't sleep on my bed. (I felt like such a meanie but I had to do that so I could function the next day).
Inger, I didn't know that about your daughter. Boy, I give a standing ovation to any mother of a special needs child.
Hahaha...I love the part about her looking at you in the dark--she was probably just so excited to be there she couldn't sleep--too cute!
Speak it sister! I don't enjoy sleeping with either one of my children. I've been known to move them after they fall asleep back to their bed so that I can sleep.
It's hard to function all day if you don't sleep. Hope tonight is better!
I know exactly how you feel....that is what she did to me that night she slept with me and Roy Austin was sleeping in my room too. I never went to sleep all night. It will get better. My boys use to alternate when Franklin left and it was a sweet time. They will tell you things late at night when you are all alone that they won't share normally......so keep trying. As far as the dog thing....they get more germs in one of those play areas at Chick-filet than they do from a dog. Those places are nasty! Love you and miss you,
Jane Austin
