When I was little, I HATED going to Vacation Bible School. Maybe it was the homebody in me or maybe the fact that my mom
made me attend my grandparents' church's VBS in Indiana one summer. I was about 6 or 7 and didn't know one single person. This was back when VBS consisted of thrilling activities like sword drills and challenges like who can memorize the most Bible verses in a week and get a shiny foil colored star for each verse memorized next to their name on a special chart. A few years later I was FORCED once again---I am not being dramatic--to attend VBS with one of my friends one summer at her church. And as you can imagine, I was not happy! Roy tells me that he didn't enjoy VBS when he was little, either. Well, this is the year that Caroline was FINALLY able to attend her first VBS. Was I going to force her? Of course! Although, our church does a great job with the children's departments. There really is no forcing needed. And like this post title states, this was not your grandmother's VBS! Our church did it differently this year. Instead of having a week of morning sessions, they had the older kids come on Tues and Wed nights and the preschoolers went on Thurs and Fri nights--with the parents! Yep! Roy and I attended this year, too! It's a campaign they have going on at our church to have the family celebrate and worship Jesus together. It was called FX: Family eXperience and it was a great idea and we had a great time. Roy Austin was too sick to put in the nursery on Thurs, so he and I stayed home while Roy and Caroline went to the praise and worship part, attended a Jewish school and did other activities. Of course when they got home, I had to pull and pry details out of Roy's memory, but he said it was fun and of course Caroline thought she was so big.
Roy and Caroline on their way to VBS after eating dinner. After all the horror stories of VBS that her parent's had experienced, I think she's a little on the nervous sid.

On Friday night, our whole family went for a Bible street bazaar kind of event. We were met by a camel, a donkey and some sheep and goats.
They had tons of shops set up in the gym. Each preschooler got a Bible outfit to wear and keep. This was Caroline's FAVORITE part of the night! Then she went to a jewelry shop and made this great necklace.
We went to hear a sermon on a mountain and ate goldfish and bread. Then Caroline showed off her pot carrying skills in a little game they played.
We went back to visit the shops and Caroline made a broom at the broom shop. This VBS was really neat. Other shops included: a sandal making shop, music shop, Caroline made a coin purse with play money at the coin shop, a bakery, vegetable and fruit tasting...the staff thought of everything. Roy and I were really impressed. I think Carmel Baptist made up for our past experiences with Vacation Bible School! Oh, and Mom...no hard feelings. If I were in your shoes, I would have made me go to VBS, too:)

Soooooo sorry, Donna. I guess, back then, I thought it was the thing to do to send you off to VBS at Grandma's church. Now it's lodged in your memory just like the fur coat experience. Well anyway, I'm really glad VBS has evolved into the great thing it is today. Caroline looks like she had a wonderful time, and it's something she'll remember with pleasure. Roy, on the other hand, looks like he doesn't know what he's going to be getting into. I know he had fun, too. Just being able to take that precious little thing with him was probably the highlight of his day!! Thanks for another great blog post.
I am so sorry that we weren't able to attend...I can tell we really missed out. We will be there next year for sure. Glenn had late nights this week with it being orientation week for the new job and we were just wiped out with the new schedule.
Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks.
You have the best blog postings!
Love the posts!! Who said they were forced! I was the child who loved going to VBS, then again I was an only child, so maybe I was craving some quality "kid time". I do admit VBS has come a long way. Our church had VBS this week and I heard Bibleman was there! lol
Also, I was just catching up on your posts and I am for sure headed to get some cookie cutters!! I hope I can still find some good shapes. I also need to get Sarah a July the 4th outfit and am hoping to find one on sale:)
oh, and happy 1 year anniversary! I must say, it keeps me up with everything going on in all our lives!
Looks like Caroline had a big time. Now I'm excited for ours; I hope it is as much fun. Mary Farrell only got to go one night last year, so I think she's looking forward to it this year. Ours is the first week in Aug. Caroline looks so cute in her outfit!!
Great idea for VBS. Still much work goes into it, but great to involve the whole family!
Hope RB is feeling better!
So cute! Caroline looks just like you in that picture w/ her necklace!
Ooooh, fun! I *LOVED* VBS! We usually went to two different ones, and sometimes I'd go with a friend to another one, too.
The picture of Roy and Caroline is hysterical. It cracks me up. I wasn't crazy about Vacation Bible School either. Boring......Too much like school for me.
Donna it is really good your mom made you do certain things because it has sure made reading your blogs more fun. But, in your mom's defense, she was just preparing you for life!!!! Go Jan.....Good job because you sure turned out a bunch of great daughters so the damage wasn't too bad. You just prepared them for a world that "ain't" fair, and we are still spoiled. Roy needs just to buy her a fur coat...that is his job now..and not rabbit. Love to all, Jane
They let you take an outfit home? What a great idea! We were not able to make FX, but heard wonderful things about it. Your pics are fabulous.
Mrs. Graham, you are sweet! (smiling)
Go Carmel Baptist! THat's a great idea to have the whole family involved. It was probably more like a carnival type atmosphere than your typical VBS. I don't remember a lot about VBS when I was a kid. I just remember going to camps every summer. I LOVED CAMP!
Denise, lol that you called jane, mrs. Graham!
What fun! I use to LOVE VBS when I was little. Carmel did a fabulous thing, including the whole family.
Again...I am just SO IMPRESSED with Jenius and Jane...THE TWO J'S! Not only are you both commenting on a regular basis but you both are so witty and funny. You both need to start your own blogs and mentor us younger women.
I do need to point out that the fur coat subject keeps coming up every few weeks or so. Get the victory, Donna....just get the victory! LOL!
