It's a BABY!!!

This morning, I had an early hair appointment for a trim. I dropped Caroline off at preschool and hurried over to the salon. While walking in the door Roy Austin started to get a little fussy and I just hoped that he would make it through the appointment without me having to take him out of his seat. Well, when I walked in, I was the first client there and all the stylist were sitting around talking with the receptionist. When they saw that I was carrying a baby carseat, it was like ants at a picnic. They all swarmed around me and made cute baby talk to Roy Austin. I smiled, answered their questions and comments (yes, he does have a lot of hair---I'm getting tired of that one--and, his name is Roy Austin. Not Roy, not Austin. It's a double name and a family name). I went to sit down and tell my stylist what I wanted, placing the carseat on the floor in front of me. This is where I got annoyed.

Okay, first of all, I do love babies. I think they're adorable, sweet, innocent and peaceful. Nothing is sweeter than a newborn baby, BUT I don't go crazy when I see one! I don't have to hold it or stand around the mother awkwardly until she offers me the opportunity to hold her prized possession. The only babies that I demand to hold are my neices and nephews because they are blood and because I am their Auntie..oh yeah, and because I don't care what my sisters think:) Now as far as my babies go, I don't care if people I know want to hold them or want to tickle their cheeks. It's the crazy strangers that get to me. Kind of like the ladies I encountered today.

So, I place Roy Austin down on the floor and go to get my hair washed. While my head's under the water, I hear his cry and then I hear someone attending to his pacifier. As I make my way back to the chair, the "helper" informs me that if I tickle his cheek, he'll open his mouth and suck the pacifier instantly. Wow. Thanks, genius. I never thought of that. Then she informs me that all babies do that. So, now Roy Boy is fussy and a little annoyed. The pacifier girl squats down next to him, rocking his seat and talking to him, while he's getting more fussy. Finally she leaves just in time for others to stop by. Some of them stand awkwardly with their arms folded, looking at him. I can tell they would explode with happiness if I offered to let them hold Roy Boy, but I don't! One of the "watchers" I can see in the mirror and she is starring at him with her hands over her mouth in shock like she's never seen a baby before. She stays in this position for about 2 minutes or so before wandering off. Off an on, he gets more fussy, cries a little and then stops. A lady runs back to the booth I'm sitting in and says "I thought I heard a baby back here!" (she was a client from the waiting room, by the way). My pacifier teacher comes back to see that Roy Austin has dozed off so what does she do? She squats down again and shoves his pacifier back in his mouth, waking him and making him cry! The whole time I'm thinking, "LEAVE THE BABY ALONE!!!!!!!!". The icing on the cake was one elderly lady who was getting her hair done. She passed Roy Austin on her way to get her hair washed and on her way back to the chair, she stopped and rocked his seat (what is it with people just deciding to rock a baby's car seat?!) and then just squatted there looking at him for about 3 minutes. This whole time, I'm smiling politely and agreeing that "he had a lot of hair for a baby", but you can guess what I'm thinking.

Luckily the appointment was a quick one and I was out the door with a bunch of ladies waving and making cute little baby faces at my sweet boy. I wish I had my camera with me so I could have taken some shots of the fans---especially the one who had never seen a baby before.

HHHHAAAA!!!! Donna this is a great post! People are just crazy if you ask me. Glad that you got your hair cut and survived the salon. Way to go not giving into the pressure of letting him be held by strangers.

That was hilarious! No don't let strangers hold your baby - cold and flu season people! I love advice from those that I don't know, it is always the best :) since they know my children so well!

Donna, that's funny! Chinese people go crazy over white babies here. So, someone has actually come up to my friend's baby stroller and taken the baby out before she could stop them. Their little girl is always being photographed and picked at.
It's crazy! Like you said, babies are precious, but the drama is not necessary.

Donna, Donna, Donna, what else are you supposed to do when you have a cute little baby? Be happy you have an adorably healthy and sweet baby. If he wasn't then maybe NOBODY would want to comment and see him. I know it gets annoying but that's part of making cute kids. I think you just need your sister Dolly there too so when you go get your hair cut, I can stay home with him and give you a rest.

Okay, I am stepping on my soap box with this post of yours.

I am with you all the way. I love babies too, but I'll be frank---I don't have the desire to hold other peoples babies unless THEY ask me to. I just don't get people who think they have the right to just hold your baby, because it's a baby! To the many people who have taken my baby, (out of my arms at times, to "help me out") I want to say, NO! He or she is NOT YOUR BABY!!!! and IF I NEED YOUR HELP I'LL ASK!!!!!

Then you have those (this can be IL's too) who want to hold your baby, and then think they can just mozy around the church or a party, restaurant, or whatever, with your baby, never stopping to think that they mother may not want her baby OUT OF HER SIGHT. And of course everyone knows how to take care of YOUR baby, better then you do.

I can go on and on--beleive me I have experienced it all. That is why, as weird as I may appear to the local peeps around here, my baby, my last baby, is going to stay with me! As long as I want!

Okay, I am stepping down. Sorry. This just struck a nerve with me!

Also, good girl on being brave and getting your hair done 3 weeks PP WITH the baby! I am proud of you.

And, sorry for the many typo's in my above comments. I sent it before I read it. I was just commenting away......

Wow! What's that you have? A baby? I've never seen a baby before! Great. So, this is what I get to look forward to? Ugh....people are so weird. How intrusive! Remind me to put my baby in a bubble when I have it! :)

Denise! LOL! I agree w/ everything you said. When Dolly has a baby, she'll understand:) I do agree w/ her about needing her here in NC though!!!

I am chuckling after reading this, but it is oh-so-true. I never thought I would mind anyone commenting or holding my baby, but it is the worst when they walk off with your baby and you have no idea where they are, even if it is at church. Denise is right on with this one. Even in Target or Wal-Mart it seems people are always stopping me and touching my baby. I can so agree with your frustration.
