A Must Read!

This is my new favorite book (along with "And the Shofar Blew"). I had heard about it last summer when it came out but I have just started to get to the point where I can read books that I want again (or at least make time to do it!). So, a friend gave it to me to read last Tuesday and I started it Wednesday night and could not put it down. We had a busy weekend so I couldn't read it like I wanted to, but I found the time to fit a few pages in here and there. I think Roy is happy I'm done with it, because he was getting tired of my face in this book each night:)
Seriously, if you haven't read this, do it!! It is SO eye-opening. I literally laughed out loud several times (those of you have read it, the pie incident made me die laughing!!) and I even teared up a few times.
This is from the Amazon synopsis: "...set during the nascent Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi where black women were trusted to raise white children but not polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts, enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, Aibileen's best friend, Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times for mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams."
This synopsis doesn't do the book justice. Pick it up and read it. You won't be able to put it down and you'll really stop and think about how the culture and regions we live, shape the way we think, judge and treat others.

I love this book. I read it about 7-8 months ago, and I still find myself wondering how Skeeter did in NYC...I wish there could be a sequel. Oh well. At least we have the movie to look forward to.

I'll take your word for it. I'll start this one after I finish two more. I'm on Echo in the Wind now and loving it too! Keep the book recommendations coming.

Kristin, the first thing I did after I finished was google "The Help Movie" and a bunch of articles came up confirming the movie!! Can't wait. I think Sheri Shepherd from The View would make a PERFECT Minny!!!

Oh, and Nancy....read Francine Rivers' "And the Shofar Blew". It's hard to get into but a definite page turner and a real eye-opener!

First of all something is up with Blogger because I am not getting you OR Dolly's blogs posts in my email anymore. Weird?

I will have to add this book to list, after VITW series. I have never heard of it before.

Donna, I loved this book. Funny you should recommend "And the Shofar Blew" as I requested it through the library system a few weeks ago and just got an email that is has arrived. I am reading the Barbara Bush book...it is awesome!

I am just catching up on blogs for the first time in several weeks, but I'm in the middle of reading this right now, and I too, have enjoyed it immensely. I didn't read your whole post just in case it gave something away. I look forward to discussing it soon! I'm trying to train myself to read again even in the midst of chaos!!
