I love Little House on the Prairie. I can hear the theme song playing on TV and instantly feel warm and happy. I've seen each episode many times and even use certain phrases from the show from time to time with my sisters (ie: "I'm here....I'm here!!" inside joke from the episode where the blind girl is lost in the wind storm) and I can usually relate any situation back to an episode of LH. I have the entire series on DVD, so imagine my excitement when Caroline discovered them the other night and wanted to watch an episode. I immediately stopped what I was doing and took out season one and we watched the first two episodes, the second one being one of my all-time favorite episodes. What isn't there to love about "Country Girls"? This episode introduces mean Nellie Olsen to Mary and Laura. She teases them about being "country"and the way she says it is so funny (again, a quote I love to use with my sisters....."Coun---try Girls".) And Harriet Olsen is introduced to the audience, too, during this episode. I love Harriet! She's one of my favorites. I love the way she says "Oh, for heaven's sake"! When Caroline first saw her she told me that Mrs. Olsen had a baby in her belly....and she was very serious. I guess that corset didn't squeeze her in enough! And then when Harriet was being mean to Ma, Caroline looked up to the ceiling and said: "God! Help Mrs. Olsen to be nice!" I think I have a future LHOTP fan on my hands. The ending of this particular episode gets me every time. It's so sweet, so pure....so Little House.
Now, if I could pick any character to be on TV, hands down I would choose Caroline Ingalls (aka, Ma). She is so soft spoken, calm, comforting, always takes the high road, is a great wife/mother and... I just love her. She reminds me a lot of my mom.

And that Pa! WOW WEE! Is he a looker, or what? I love the way he treats his wife and family, his work ethic, how wise he is, his contagious smile and laugh, the way he is not afraid to show his emotions...he reminds me of my dad. So, which daughter does that make me? Mary, Laura, Carrie or Grace? Actually.....
...one year for Thanksgiving, we all dressed up as famous Americans and Dolly and I dressed up as Laura and Carrie Ingalls. I guess the love for Little House was forced upon me:)
And since we're discussing LH, I have to say that the one character on the show that I have never enjoyed is Mary Ingalls. I don't know why, but she has always gotten on my nerves. And my least favorite episode is the creepy one where that man wears a clown mask to sneak up on Albert's girlfriend. Remember? Caroline has already asked to watch another episode tonight, and since The Bachelorette is beyond stupid this time, tonight will have to be a LH night:)

I LOVE Little House too!!! I only have seasons 1-4 right now...but it is my all time favorite. Thanks for the fun post. I can't wait for Norah to want to watch it too!
There's really nothing on tv today like the old shows that had morals, values, people with character, and lessons to be learned. Little House, The Waltons, and lots of other old shows like that are wonderful for the kids to watch. I'm so glad most of those shows are offered on DVD's now. Am I being an old fuddy duddy?
Love, love, love LHOTP. Not a big fan of Mary though. Sort of a whiner?
I don't think I have ever seen an episode of Little House where I haven't cried... sad or happy tears.
This post brings back many happy memories of watching Little House. I will never forget the episodes where Albert gets addicted to drugs...wow, it was heart wrenching.
That photograph of you and your sisters is PRECIOUS!
PS - sometimes I just start singing that theme song. I love it.
You guys need to lay off of Mary. She did not have the easiest life, you know. ;o)
We loved watching Little House when we were growing up. It came on every day after school. One of my favorite episodes is when the family farm had to be auctioned off, and the friends bought everything for change so they could sell it all back to the Ingalls family. Sigh ...
I messed up on my first comment and decided to do it over! I am a big LH fan too!! I watched the first season with my sisters as a girl - love it!!!!
Okay, first thing this morning Maddie broke out the LH Dvd's. Country girls is playing on the TV in my room. SILLY me had to walk out because I didn't want to cry in front of the children when Ma got new fabric to make her a dress...the rest of the story is just TOO sweet. I don't think I can watch it. Me no want to cry.
Sniff Sniff Sniff---Ma just gave Mary and Laura the dresses she made for THEM out of HER dress fabric!
Donna- I was just trying to catch up on your blog. gosh...I can not believe RA is climbing out of his crib!!! that is for sure a boy!! Sarah is still in her's, but as soon as we get the rails installed she is going to her big girl bed.
Donna, did I ever tell you that my oldest daughter is named after the youngest daughter on the show and her imaginary friend? twins played the part of Carrie and on one show they were on together! ( Cari Alisa is my daughter)
Amy
Donna, I would love to know how many times you've referenced Little House on the Prairie on your blog! :) You are one serious fan! I'm sure you have these, but I do have the book collection (in the yellow cardboard box) and Caroline can borrow those when she starts reading. Oh, and I have the cookbook too but you'll have to buy a lot of lard because that's what half the stuff is made of.
Amy, I never knew that Cari was named after Carrie Ingalls!! Now that is what I call a serious LH fan!!!!
Jennifer, Dayna and Denise had that same book collection in that same yellow box:) I can still see the pictures on the side!!!
I am laughing at this post. I also have the yellow boxed set and have seen all the episodes a million times. I do have to say that the TV shows are so much more exciting than the books. I love the episode where Manly starts falling in love with Laura and they share their first kiss. (BIG SIGH). I think it is called Sweet Sixteen.
Donna, you heartless girl....Mary wend blind for crying out loud. How could you not love Mary. And then to add insult to injury...her baby burned to death in the fire at the blind school. You have to love Mary....you just have to.
Mary isn't very likab;e in the books either!
You need to check out the Little House on The Prairie movie that disney did. It might take you a little bit to get used to Laura not being Melissa Gilbert, but once you do, IT IS WONDERFUL!
ALso - there is a production of LHOTP coming to OKC and Melisa Gilbert is IN IT!!! How cool is that?!
I reckon I remind you of Harriet? Oh dear!!!! I like Michael Landon in Bonanza better......Little Joe on his paint horse.....yes that was the best!!!! Liked Hoss too, because he as so sweet.
I think I watched about 4 episodes of Little House on the Prairie!
I seriously thought that was an "olden days" photograph of you and your sisters kids! Wow! That picture of you looks just like Caroline!
We love Little House too!
I totally agree with Mary being annoying!!!
OKay, I'm just catching up and have so much to say. FIrst off, I'm LOL at Jane's comment. Everyone at Leland's office calls him "Hoss" because he reminds them of HOss on Bonaza. Funny thing is, I can see the resemblance. My man is so handsome. And speaking of handsome, I REALLY love the name, "Manly"! That may just have to go on the list of names for future boys? It's just so, well, MANLY!
I love LHOTP too! I agree that I will always get a tear in my eye in every episode. This is making me want to watch them so I think Leland and I will pull them back out to watch tonight. Sounds so romantic huh?
I thought I had already commented on this.
Dolly, better yet...you could always name your next son Almonzo (how do you spell that anyway?) I didn't mind Mary until she went blind and then I never wanted to be her when we played "Little House."
Jane, you are a mess but that reminds me when I would be sassy when I was little, my mom would tell me not to act like Nelly Olson. I used to hate that and in my head I would think (but not dare say) "Well, stop being like Ms. Hannigan (from Annie)."
How bout the one where Laura gives up her horse to Nelly so Nells will give Ma the stove she wants for Christmas but her Christmas present is a saddle that Pa worked so hard to make. BIG Sniff Sniff!
Hannah, that is another one of my favorite episodes! In fact, we just watched that one the other day---Christmas at Plum Creek:) That is a tear jerker for sure!!!! Leave it to Half Pint.
Now that Caroline likes LH, I've started saying "Don't act like Nellie Olsen". Works like a charm.
Good post, Donna! You know how much I love that show! I still feel like I need some "closure" with Albert. Did he die from the illness?? Did he marry his sweetheart?
One of my favorites is when Nellie pretends that she can't walk and Laura sees her dancing through the window and takes Nellie for a walk in her wheelchair and rolls her down the hill. (major run-on sentence!)
I liked when Mr. Edwards was crossing the freezing creek and the kids thought he was Santa Claus. I think that probably was my favorite of the books too. I loved reading those books growing up....I !am with you ........ Mary .... uck! .... but she was a good big sister! Dolly, Manly is better than Almonzo but you will have to admit Joseph on Bonanzo sounds lots better and he looks better than Manly!
We LOVED Little House!! I still watch episodes on the Hallmark Channel...it is just about the only show that will hold my attention anymore! Wish they still had shows like this on TV!
