Pray for Aunt Sandy

Aunt Sandy is not my real aunt. She is my mom's best friend, so we grew up calling her "Aunt". About 4 years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after chemo and several trips to Germany for medical consults with doctors, it seems there is nothing left that can be done medically to help her.

Sandy and my mom became friends in elementary school, went to college together and ironically, Uncle Jim and my Dad went to high school and college together, too, where they eventually met these two ladies. They entered and served in the navy together while Aunt Sandy and Mom stayed back home. The pictures these two have during those days are hilarious! Once, they conducted a fashion show and took pictures of themselves to send to their husbands in the Philippines!! They were definitely partners in crime during this time. I remember Aunt Sandy saying once that my sister, Dayna, was like their real, live baby doll because it was always the three of them and they would just play with Dayna and take turns dressing her! Growing up, it was always so much fun when Aunt Sandy came to visit or when we'd go visit with her family. She has beautiful blonde hair and I remember always thinking she was so pretty! She was a cosmetologist, so she'd always do our hair when we'd see her and she and my mom would spend so much time laughing and reminiscing together.

She and her husband, Uncle Jim, counsel ministry couples who are in crisis, in Greenville, SC. At one time, they were living and running their ministry in Agnes Moorehead's (Andorra on Bewitched) old house in Ohio. I remember one summer Dolly and I went to spend a few days with them and she took us to the local college to go through Agnes Moorhead's old belongings. We were led to this room and given free reign to look through old boxes of movie scripts, TV memorabilia and even hold the Emmy award she received! How cool! On that trip, Aunt Sandy even showed me how not be afraid to ask to speak to the manager of a store or ask for a clerk's name if the customer service you receive is not good--every time I do it, I think of her:)

She was there for one of my "crazy bride breakdowns" the summer before my wedding. I think I was crying because....well I'm not going to say because it sounds really bratty, but she gave me a good pep-talk on the gazebo and told me to take a deep breath and I remember feeling better because of it.

It's hard to think that she could be gone soon. She's still so young. I haven't seen her since Dolly's wedding, but I will always remember her as a beautiful blonde with perfect makeup and perfectly outlined lips, smelling like fresh perfume, having beautiful long, skinny fingers--always with a fresh coat of nail polish--wearing that ruby and gold pinkie ring she wears and talking and describing things with her hands in a dramatic fashion.

If you think about it, please pray for my Aunt Sandy--that she will be comfortable during this time and at peace. And please pray for strength for her husband, Jim, and their son, Jonathan, too.

Wow! This post brought me to tears. What good memories we have with her and I will always remember her the same way you described. She's such a fun lady and I always loved it when she was around. It's hard to understand why God allows certain things to happen to people but I know that Aunt Sandy is still staying positive and knows that God is still in control. Nice post Donna!

I was just thinking about another time Aunt Sandy gave me some advice. I was living in DC at the time and home visiting. I was "dating" this guy that was NOT FOR ME and she told me to think about if I married him and what our kids would be like. He had really messed up teeth and she said, "your kids would have messed up teeth too." hahahaah!

That was a very well written post Donna.

Aunt Sandy is truly a classy lady--as Danny stated last night when we were talking about her and this sad situation.

I am so glad we got to go see her after Dolly's shower last Fall.

Dolly, you're so funny! Donna, that was a wonderful post about Sandy. Thank you for that. Everything you said is so true. Dolly, remember the time you and Dawn were visiting them in Michigan one summer? They took you to the county fair, but didn't have much money to spend. You (at the age of about 7 or 8 maybe) wanted a whoopie cushion, but didn't have the funds. You went up to an old man and asked him for a quarter....and he gave it to you! You got your whoopie cushion and you ALL had so much fun with it. We still laugh at that memory.

Jennifer, Jim (Sandy's husband), is the one who was the interim pastor for that church in Greenville (maybe Taylors) for the past year or so. Can't remember the name of the church (Grace Baptist, maybe), but I think the former pastor had a son die recently. Do you know who I mean?

Anyway, thank all of you for your prayers in their behalf. I know at least a half dozen people personally who are going through very hard times rignt now. It's not easy to understand God's ways, but it's wonderful to know that HE is in control.

Dolly, that was so funny!! Donna you are truly a wonderful writer. That post was beautiful for a beautiful person. Each and every person who does not know Aunt Sandy knows her personally know because of the words you wrote. What a gift you have!

Aunt Sandy is credited with potty training me because she was keeping me for a bit while mom was in the hospital. I'm sure that was a pleasant experience for her...all those accidents! Aunt Sandy also loves to be tickled by long pieces of field grass which has the furry seed pods on the end. Every time she would come to our house we would make sure we had several of those "ticklers" so we could gently rub them along her arm and hear her giggle and laugh. What a special lady she is! The other funny thing in recent years is her inability to hear as well as she used to hear. She is always saying "What's that. I can't hear you." And that was always followed by a giggle too!!

What a wonderful testimony, first by you, Donna, and then also by the rest of the Reber women. What will people rememebr of us when the time comes? I rejoice that your Sandy's testimony is one of love, ministry, and laughs, and service. I will pray for her.
