Mix It Up A Little, Guys.

Roy's still out of town. Can you tell I have tons of free time?!

One of the local stations here in Charlotte is already playing Christmas music. I love it, but for some reason when stations do this, they ALL play the same songs over and over again...and by the same artists! It drives me nuts and by early December, I'm forced to listen strictly to my Christmas CDs. I know there are tons of songs out there so mix it up a little, guys! I have compiled a list of Christmas songs by certain artists played on the radio that I have come to detest:

1. Merry Christmas, Darling by the Carpenters

2. Happy Christmas by John Lennon and Yoko Ono (this song is realllly annoying)

3. The Christmas Shoes (sweet song but it's played WAY too much)

4. Deck the Halls by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra

5. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Sarah Mclachlan (again, REALLY annoying)

6. Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid (I Hate this song!!!)

7. Feliz Navidad--(annoying by any artist...it doesn't matter who)

8. Same Old Lange Syne by Dan Fogleberg (does anyone know what I'm talking about? This has got to be the most annoying "Christmas" song out there....it's about a man who runs into his old girlfriend and they enjoy a conversation and catch up on life. It's really bad.)

And since I'm already complaining (Sorry, Jennifer), here is another Christmas issue I have. I'm making my Christmas card list but there are a few people who, no matter how many years I've sent them one of our Christmas cards, they NEVER send us one back. Even when we see them, they never acknowledge our card. I don't expect everyone I send a card to, to tell us they received it, but it would be nice for some people, when we see them in person, to say, "hey, we got your card! It was so cute!" or "Wow, your kids are getting so big. I LOVED your Christmas card this year". Should I continue to send them Christmas greetings or just give up. Most of them are family friends....nobody extremely close to us. Any advice?

I can relate to your Christmas card issue! Listen, stamps cost WAY too much, not to mention the cost of the cards themselves and the thought involved and ....the dreaded....FAMILY PHOTO EXPERIENCE!!

So, I say cross those people off that list! A few years ago I cut my list down, and honestly none of those people even said, hey I didn't get your card! So chances are it doesn't matter to them.

I have another complaint (while we are at it)...I don't get the point of a Christmas card (from friends) without a picture! SEND me a family photo!!!! Or at least one of the kids!

We do the whole family one year then just the kids the next..not that hard! (UGH but this is the "family picture" year!)

Hope you have a nice day tomorrow..and just turn the radio off!!

Donna, I can't believe a Trans-Siberian Orchestra song would make this list. Although I must say I'm not familiar with their version of "Deck the Halls" & can't seem to find it on any of their CD's. Maybe it just sounds like that song but they call it something different? Just make sure you don't forget "Christmas Eve Sarajevo" if you come out with a best Christmas songs list.

You know, Tiger Dave. I thought I remembered you and Chrystal going to one of their concerts one year, or was it Manheim Steamroller? No, some of their songs I like, but this particular one is played just WAYYYY too much. Maybe it's not called "deck the halls" but a medley or something? WHatever it is, it's annoying.

Thanks for commenting!! I think it's so funny when you do. And by the way, you're famous. When y'all left RA's bday party, I had a bunch of people ask if "that was Tiger Dave"!!!

I am totally with you on the Christmas song thing. The Christmas Shoes song is the worst. It is a sweet song (albeit, very far out there) and the guy that sings it sounds like he is singing it in a closet and doesn't want to be caught singing or something. Like he is whispering or something?
I always send Christmas cards out and it's always the same people who never respond back. I just keep sending them to them, though. I always end up having way too many cards and pictures and I don't want to throw them out!

Donna,
No complaints here buuuuuuuuuuut I hope we have sent you a card because we love yours!!!!!!!!!! We simply print an address list off our computer and I have paid very little attention to whose on it. I know that sounds lame. All that to say dont take us off you list.

Chrystal said...

Well, I guess my Tigerdave beat me to the comments, but I share your issue with the Christmas card list! Every year we try to narrow down the list to just close family, friends, and people who send us cards but then I feel awful leaving those poor folks out who probably need a cute picture of Savannah to make them smile. I don't know what to do either. . . but I do know that Dave DREADS the stress I cause from making the perfect card and the questions of who to send them to! :)

Donna, I like your complaining - it has a fun twist to it! I know a few girls (none that you guys know) who have blogs and literally by the way they write you would think they're miserable all the time. Every post is sarcastic and negative. I probably should have not said that in my post, but I definitely don't want anyone to think I'm an angry woman who has a miserable life! I digress...

Anyway, I never listen to the radio during Christmas because I constantly have my cd's in. But, I can only imagine how many times they play The Carpenter's Christmas songs - which by the way I love. My list of Christmas cd's everyone needs to buy...Mariah Carey, Kenny & Dolly, Faith Hill, Neil Diamond and Josh Grobin.

The Christmas card thing is a hard call because some people maybe just don't know the correct "card" etiquette but probably love getting your card each year. You know what I mean? Maybe just think about whether you want them to see your family each year...is it important to you?

Okay, my novel is done.

I am agreeing with you on the annoying Christmas songs - yes, Christmas Shoes is sweet but do they have to play it over and over and over?? I don't like Karen Carpenter songs so any of hers annoy me - her voice annoys me.

As far as the Christmas cards, I say X them off. I have just done that this year - friends of family that never send one back. I like getting the family photo and I like the parents to be in the picture too - so you and Roy need to be in the photo with Caroline and RA :) - just my opinion on that!

Momofgirls said...

I totally agree with Jennifer! Get the Mariah Carey Chrismas CD! It is soo good!

My girls bought the Target Chritmas CD with The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, etc. and I had to ride in Shae's "mini van" (haha) with her yesterday...***annoying music***

Karen said...

OK, I have to disagree with you on some of those songs. Three of your most-hated are among some of my faves! ;o) However, let me just say ... on the Christmas card list ... preach it, sister! I sent out a ton of cards even before we got married. And you know what happens to the list when you had your husband's peeps. Whew! I have had to trim the list waaaaaay down the last couple of years. What gets me is people who say they love our card and letter each year--but NEVER send us one (although they send my sister one)! Yes, this is true. I purged them last year or the year before. I think I may have to cut our list back even more this year. I hate to be all "well, if you don't send us one, then we're not sending you one," but cards and stamps aren't cheap. Of course, there are some people I will never cut out, even if they never say "Merry Christmas." OK, I have rambled on long enough.

Interesting post Donna. On the CC issue, maybe some of the people you send CC's to, and they don't send one back, are people you see on a regular basis. For me, I usually don't send local people--like people in our church, CC's. Is that bad?

On the other hand, how can someone not be friendly when you see them and say, "Hey, I got your CC. Cute picture!" I mean--even if it's not cute, it's called being friendly. I don't know.

I for one am VERY excited about our CC this year. It is a funny card and I hope it makes everyone LAUGH! It is all ready. I am just waiting for #5 to arrive so we can get a picture of the children.

Donna said...

Wow! Good comments people. Denise, I cannot wait to see your CC. I have mine all planned out in my head. I'm waiting for my man to get home so he can do backup for my chaotic yearly photo shoot. I hope it works out the way I have it planned in my head. And Pam, Roy and I are NOT in the card this year. He was so happy the year we had Caroline because he didn't have to be in the card anymore!

Karen, which of those songs do you like. You didn't say.

OK...I like this post...way to generate some heat, Donnie!

I'll vouch for the "not every year Christmas card sender" people. First, let me establish...#1 We get your cards. #2 We ALWAYS love them. #3 We send you a card WHEN (when is the operative word) we send them...yes, it's true...I sent Christmas cards the 1st year we got married but the year after Na died, I was ANTI-Christmas and didn't send one...didn't even do a tree. Then, last year we did multiple photo shoots but never got our rumps in gear to actually get the card out. By the time I had everything in line, it was almost New Year's but no excuses there. Very lame on our part.

Soooooo...what about those peeps? Not to worry, though, I'm FO SHO getting one out this year!!!!!

I am in complete agreement about the "Christmas Shoes". I can't stand it. However, I'm not on board with the "Feliz Navidad" hate. I guess I have fond memories of the year my hispanic neighbors who lived in the other half of my duplex decorated my side with big flashy lights attached with duct tape :)!

Donna said...

Hannah!!!! I am not referring to you! I honestly didn't even remember you not sending cards! Woo! Someone's feeling guilty and her name starts with an "H"!! No, it's not you OR your parents I'm refering to.

Kristin, I'm laughing at the thought of you wathcing tv in your duplex with bright blinking lights coming through the slats of your blinds and Feliz Navidad be played loudly by the neighbors:)

Nancy said...

Oh Donna, it seems this topic has stirred up quite a bit of conversation. I agree that some Christmas songs are annoying - has anyone brought up the Chipmunks???

kristin said...

Nancy, I'll take the Chimpmunks over Christmas Shoes anytime!

Donna, that's exactly how it was, too! And it happened to be the year that I had to host an impromptu Christmas gathering for extended family - they still talk about my duct tape and lights.

jday said...

Dave and I had the exact same conversation last year when I went to send out my Christmas cards. I had just a couple of people who never sent cards back, and I mean 14 years of cards from me, so Dave told me to cross them off and never send them a card again! So what did I get from one of them a couple of months ago?? An invitation to their daughter's wedding!!! Nice, they haven't acknowledged us in YEARS, but they want a gift for their kid!!! Can you tell this topic touched a nerve with me??! Cross them off you list, Donna!!!!

Also, I agree with the song thing. I'm like Jennifer and stick to the CD's. Last year I found a CD that is my new favorite...It's Dig That Crazy Christmas by the Brian Setzer Orchestra. I love it!! I think he was on DWTS a couple of weeks ago- remember him from the Stray Cats back in the earlier part of the 80's??? Jennifer and Kristi, surely you remember him, too??!!

Donna said...

that sounds like a CD I'd like. I like the Mariah Carey CHristmas CD, Celine's, and actually I have 2 Bath and Body Works Christmas CD's from back in the early 90's that have an assortment of CHristmas musci on them and they're my faves. Avalon has a good CHristmas CD, too. I"m goign to have to pass on Josh Groban, y'all. I like his voice but after 1-2 songs, I"m Groban'd out.

Chelle said...

I can't believe no one has mentioned the theme from Charlie Brown's Christmas...it's only played every 5 minutes and I find it very annoying!

I feel your pain about the Christmas cards. By the way, I LOVED your card and your kids have grown so much!! ;)

Karen said...

Hey, Donna, OK ... here goes ... I love the Dan Fogelberg song. And "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" ... as well as "Do They Know It's Christmas"

And now that I think about it, I don't mind "Feliz Navidad," either.

... running for cover ...

hahaha

That song about the Christmas shoes just makes me laugh because Kristen Burke and I had a joke about it that now I can't even remember. But when I hear it--which is often because it does get a lot of airtime--I think of her. LOL!

Unknown said...

OK...they don't play this one on 91.9 or 106.9 but how 'bout Adam Sandler's Happy Hannukah song. Do you know what I'm talkin about?

Happy Four said...

Donna, oh how I can relate to your entry. Family Life Radio is playing the same songs over and over. I have pulled out our Christmas CD's and have then playing in the car and at home so we have a nice mix. I have a few on my blog playlist and thankfully none of the songs are it are on your overexposure list!

Speaking of cards; we are taking a huge step this year. I am working on a Christmas blog and will email out a short email with a link to the blog that will have a Christmas letter with photographs on it. In the past I have sent out SO many cards all over the world and even some of my aunts and uncles don't acknowledge them or send us one. Now at $1.00 to shiop them one, sadly, this year it is a no go. It makes me feel a little sad, but it was also very time consuming writing them a personal message each year by hand.
We'll see how it goes this year. I bet since we are not sending out cards we won't receive nearly as many, but hopefully people will sense we care via the email blog letter.

Donna said...

Oh, Karen! Those three are the ones I hate the most!!! You're funny, taking cover:)

Chelle, I forgot about the Charlie Brown song. That IS annoying! That song stresses me out and by the time it's over, I feel like I should be running or doing something really fast.

Caroline, good idea about the Christmas blog. Make sure you send me an email link and I'll rant and rave about your kids:)

This is Shelly, Donna's way cool Chicagoland cousin, and I would have to say that we play all the same obnoxious songs up here, so I can jump on that bandwagon! However, I am horrible at song titles and the artist's name that goes along with them, but Five for Fighting has a really neat Christmas song out (Noel, perhaps...don't recall at the moment) anyone know who or what I'm talking about? Also, what about the Hippopatomus song? Does that get played on your stations? That song and Madonna's Santa Baby are 2 songs that I sadly find myself singing to. With Santa Baby, it's because I like singing the "ba doom" parts, mostly because on a good day I can actually reach that low range. Oh, and how about the Red Baron, the Snoopy song? Not the Charlie Brown theme, but Snoopy, know what I mean? Ok, that's all for now.

PS...what's this twitter talk on you and MLISF? I've seen it before and heard of it but me no getty. Is it like the status line on FB?

timandmichelle (timandshelly) said...

After all that gabbing I forgot all about Christmas cards. I am one of those who, maybe I should whisper this, have never sent CC's out. sheepish grin. I thought I might this year, so perhaps I should get all your addresses (Former Rebers and aunt Jan). Thebodaclan@yahoo.com. I don't hear anything of Dawn, so maybe one of you could forward her address on to me too? I don't promise to get around to sending them, but I guarantee to think about it, at the very least!

Momofgirls said...

Donna, I have NEVER missed sending out Christmas card...not once...in 21 years!

If you send me yours, I will send you mine!

I have to add something about CC's. We get one each year from someone that is an LU alumni. It just cracks me up how they take the picture . It is like "how many of our awesome belongings can be in the picture BEHIND our incredibly beautiful, perfectly dressed straight A getting children" Gag Me!!

Tiger Dave said...

Wow, I'm gone for a day & come back to see another one of my songs dissed. I love the Charlie Brown theme music!

Donna, you're right, it was a Manheim Steamroller concert - we had to miss the Sunday school party for it. I love their music, but I wouldn't attend a concert again unless we had great seats. If you're in the nosebleed section like we were, you may as well just stay home & listen to the CD's.

I think the T-S Orchestra song you're thinking of may be a medley called "A Mad Russian's Christmas." It's got parts that kinda sound like Deck the Halls. I don't get to listen to the radio much, so I guess I don't hear any of these songs enough to get annoyed by them.

Oh, one more comment. HPS, good call on Adam Sandler's Hannukah song. It always cracks me up.

Dolly said...

Hi Shelly! Your comment made me laugh. Wow! So much controversy on this blog. I for one LOVE Christmas SONGS! Yes, some of them get on my nerves but you can never NOT like Christmas music and you only really listen to it for maybe a month and 1/2. Donna, I CANNOT BELIEVE you don't like Josh Groben!!! His Christmas CD is the best. Of course Celine's is right up there with his.

Donna said...

Wow! Who would've thought that cards and songs would generate this much discussion.

Shelly, I'm laughing at your comments, too. I can just picture you doing the "da booms" while you drive in the car with your kids!

Tiger Dave, you like the Charlie Brown song? Seriously?

Dolly, like I said, I don't mind Josh Groban, but after 2 songs, his voice gets on my nerves. I did however find out that my man, Michael Buble, has a Christmas CD out but it's only like 5 songs. He does a great rendition of Let It Snow, and it's Michael Buble. You HAVE to like him.

And don't laugh at me, but Amy Grant's Christmas CD from the early 90's is a great one, too. I always come back to that one.

Happy Four said...

I still play the Amy Grant Christmas CD too Donna. I pulled all of our CD's out about a week ago. It is quite an eclectic collection. I just purchased The Celtic Woman's Christmas CD this a.m. as it was recommended to me...trying to mix it up a bit. I also got the Taylor Swift one last year and my boys love to listen to it in the car and we are not country music lovers, but it is GOOD!

timandmichelle (timandshelly) said...

Ok, this may fall under totally and completely dorky, but the BEST rendition of the Little Drummer Boy is done by the (I think) Christian rock group White Heart. I have completely no idea where I got the CD (from the 90's and it's probably my hubby's from the day) but that song gives me the chills everytime I listen to it, cranked up nice and loud, on repeat...dorky or what?

kristin said...

I'm sitting with Dave on this one - Love the Guaraldi Charlie Brown Theme! In fact, I even sat in the car today in a parking lot waiting on it to end. It was the first time this season I've heard it. I'm hoping Dave was in the 8:15 service last year when Lem played it on the piano!

Donna said...

Is that the slower song with the kids singing? It's kind of slow? I know there is two Charlie BRown songs. The faster one, I can't stand (it has no words). The one with the words, I do like.
