We traveled throughout the day and got into Wyoming after dark. It was so cold outside and we were so tired. When we got to our ranch, it was very dark and quiet and we couldn't see anything, as far as scenery. The next morning, I opened the curtain to go out on the porch and this is what I saw:
Can you believe that view?! I was stunned and literally stood there starring at the beauty for a few minutes. Unless you've seen the Grand Tetons in person, you cannot explain this view. The pictures do not even do it justice. It is something out of a movie. The smell of Jackson Hole is wonderful, too. It's a constant "fire burning in the fireplace" smell that's mixed with cold, crisp air and pine. I loved it!
The first day we took off right away for Cody, Wyoming. Roy has been talking about a certain museum in Cody for years. It's the Cody Firearms Museum and it is FULL of Winchesters. Winchester used to be a maker of guns, for all of you gun-illiterates. This was his "selfish day" he warned me would take place! It was a four hour drive east, but we did it through Yellowstone National Park so the views were unreal. Roy was so excited to go on a tour of the Firearms Museum that he even arranged for a private tour.
On the drive back, we stopped by Old Faithful. I had been there when I was 13 when my family went there for Christmas. Back then, there was snow everywhere so this time, it looked very different. We got there just in time to see some action:
The next two days were rainy and overcast, so we slept in, walked around the downtown area of Jackson Hole, took naps, drank hot chocolate, and drove around the surrounding areas. It was too cold to do any outdoor activities like horseback riding, but it was still nice to just have no schedule or kids around. We even went to go see some movies. Here is what Roy thought about "Nights in Rodanthe":
Here are some pictures of the cute, little town of Jackson Hole...
Another cute thing was the stop signs at our ranch. They all said "WHOA" instead of "STOP".
Every night Roy would make a fire in our room before we went to bed. We'd be so cold coming in for the night, and a roaring fire was something that we looked forward to. I tried to get Roy's picture next to the fire but he said, "no, because if I do, you'll put a stupid caption on your blog like, 'this guy lights my fires'". Hmmmm. Good idea, Roy. Thanks! So, here is one of the fires that the guy who lights my fires lit:
On our last full day in Jackson Hole, we drove through the Teton National Park. This was my favorite day because the views were unreal. We would get out of the car every once in a while and there would be no noise. Just magnificent views and fresh, cold air.
I wish I could add a scratch and sniff area here for the wonderful pine scent that we smelled when we took these pictures!

We had such a good time together and agreed that we need to do it more often. We missed those little kids of ours, though. I have to admit that a lot of our conversations went back to Caroline and Roy Austin. We arrived back in Charlotte on Tuesday night and came home to two excited kids....well, basically one. Roy Austin was timid and a little scared. Thank you to my mother-in-law for watching our kids for 6 days! That was a lot to take on and we really appreciate it. The kids had a great time and it was such a needed get-a-way for us! Thank you, Roy!

I can't believe I am the first to comment on this post. Donna, what an incredible portrayal of your anniversary trip. What treasured memories you must have and the photographs and words convey that you had a marvelous time away.
Welcome home!
Okay, I know I shouldn't envy someone, but I ENVY YOU DONNA GRAHAM!!!!! Seriously, that is like a dream vacation to me...cold and rainy days, fire burning, good lookin' man...can it get any better than that?!?!
I'm so glad you guys had a good time and I just have to say...Roy wins husband of the month for that one!!! Seriously, he done good! And I know he says he doesn't like this whole blog thing, but I would bet my firstborn that he will be reading this one!
Oh, and I love all the pictures...especially the kissing one! :)
Yay! What a fun trip! I have never been there, but we keep talking about going. Looks like an incredible place and I am so glad you shared it with us!
I LOVE this post. Ah the memories. You describe the Tetons well...there are no words...they take your breath away! I LOVE the pics and I'm glad you had fun. BTW, did you win a bid on ebay for Jackie O's cape?!?!!? Where o where were you able to find such a number? GREAT for crisp, fall/winter pics! Did it come w/ a muff?!! PLEASE say it did!
I was wondering the same thing about the cape. Very Jackie Kennedy! Glad you are back and had a good trip. See you soon!
Literally LOLing at Roy's "the guy who lights my fires" comment!
Great photos--what a cool trip and what fun memories. Good job, Roy!
Yes! I was so happy to see the update on your trip. THe pics were beautiful and I have to say that when I saw the picture of you in your cape, that's the only thing I could comment on....I LOVE IT! That's the one Roy bought for you right? He called me to find out your size. He's so funny! He did good though.
By the way, who took the pictures of the two of you kissing? Glad you had a nice trip and glad you're back. We missed you in the blog world.
Lovely post Mrs. Graham! I think you have us all wishing that could be us. Maybe in my next decade...or two!
Of course, I love the cape too. I can just hear Roy now, calling Dolly. "Dolly (long pause), (then said slowly) what size should I get for Donna.....(what a very thoughtful sweetheart man you have).
I am so glad that you got to go back and see Old Faithful. That was really nice. I bet Daddy will like hearing that!
Glad you're home sweetie, we did miss you!
Oh oh oh, and Clap Clap Clap to Mrs. Graham (Jane) for keeping the children for so long. That was seriously nice of her! Go Nana!
Wonderful pics, Donna --- and SO glad you had a great time! My hats off to you for having the great attitude on the gun tour ---you did good! :) And I agree---your cape looks STUNNING on you! Thanks for sharing your trip --- what memories to have.
Nice blog, Donna. I'm so glad you and Roy had a nice trip for your anniversary. He sure did some good planning. You can tell us more about your trip tonight when you get here. Can't wait to see you all, and we're looking forward to a wonderful weekend. Welcome back!
Ladies, ladies...this cape is getting so much attention! Roy bought it for me and gave it to me as we went to the airport. He saw it in a store and loved it. I didn't think about it, but it does have a little Jackie Kennedy-esqueness about it, huh?
Oh my goodness, Roy bought the cape TOO! I forgot to mention in my first comment that you look so chic and that I loved your coat. Change what I said about husband of the month to husband of the YEAR! Seriously, I'm speechless. I hope you treated that boy good while you were out in Jackson Hole!
Great post! Your trip looks like so much fun. I just pointed out some things as I read it to David - particularly the gun museum. You are a great wife. And how sweet of Roy to plan such a fun trip and find you that wonderful cape!
Welcome back. I know you enjoyed your vacation and then it's always nice to come home to the kiddos. I'm impressed with his trip planning and being able to keep the secret. Keep lightin' those fires!
I can nearly smell the Tetons by just reading your post! It is a beautiful place, isn't it? One of my favorites. I must admit, though - I would have abandoned Roy with the guns and gone upstairs to the western art exhibit (that's what I did to Ben!)So glad you had a great trip.
KUDOS to Roy! Wow, what a romantic trip. I love that he planned it all and surprised you--could he be any sweeter?! It looked like so much fun--the hot drinks, fire, gun musuem (so cute). Glad you guys had a great time!
donna, it made me so excited to see that you guys went to jackson hole...i have to say it is one of my most favorite places on earth...i've been twice, the last time on a trip with hannah years ago and i think i could go a hundred more and never get tired of it. happy anniversary to you guys!
What a beautiful place for a beautiful couple to visit! Great job Roy!!
You are a great American! (said like Sean Hannity) for being so sweet about the gun museum (yawn..I have been to those places!) I have had to oooo and awww over a few airplane museums too!
Now, back to reality...which is pretty beautiful too, don't you think?
Yippee for Grandmas who give us a break, and enjoy our kids for a few days!(and we enjoy the days knowing that they are in great hands!) Glad you got away...
I'm so glad you had such a great trip. I didn't know you were staying in a ranch! The pictures are beautiful and I'm glad you and Roy were able to spend some good time together!
Who knew Roy had that in him and his taste...I am impressed Roy! He must tell me where he bought that..I need one for Fall. So classic and chic! Glad you had a wonderful time. The pictures are great!
What a fun sounding anniversary trip and beautiful photos! I am able to see them on my laptop at home - BG is now blocking the pictures. What a wonderful surprise! Thanks for sharing this on your blog.
Finally...pictures. Looks like an awesome time. I must admit Roy is always good at planning suprises. And a cape at the airport! Whoa, Corey is coming down for training!
I have to agree I went to see both of those movies last week. And both receive major 2 thumbs down!
Who took the kissing picture? Did you put it on the car? Gotta always have one of those!
Donna- your trip looks so nice. A perfect romantic getaway! I didn't realize you were going away for 6 days!! without the kids!
I love the cape too. Very classy!
Donna, you will be the Sarah Palin of the cape! Just like she started the glasses frenzy...people will be rushing to get their classy little capes. You wear it well my friend. You're a beautiful girl, inside and out! Love the pictures from your trip and I LOVE how you appreciate the little things like a stop sign that says "WHOA!" That Roy, he's something else. You guys are adorable together.
ps - Did he get that from Ann Taylor by any chance??? I was there tonight and saw them in a camel color, but no black, but I guess they wouldn't have any left after you've started a phenomenon!
Oh and we saw Nights in Rodanthe too, on our anniversary...a little too "Message in a Bottle" for us.
HA, Ha! Angela, you are so funny. Sarah Palin of Capes! Who would have thought that capes would make a comeback. I had a cape shawl when I was little and I thought it was so pretty. I wore it on Sundays.
My new phenomenon came from a boutique in Charlotte. I didn't realize AnnTaylor had them. They must be the new accessory.
OK, I am behind on my blogging due to a death in Mike's family.
First of all, I am shocked at the destination. I would have NEVER guessed Jackson Hole. Actually I have never heard of Jackson Hole but know of Yellowstone, the G. Tetons, etc. The pictures are stunning. What a wonderful, cozy place to get away too. I am very impressed with your hubby for the trip and the cape. He has good taste. I know that Roy was just envisioning his wife in a lodge in the mountains laid out rather provocatively on a bear skin rug. That was the motivation! Ha! I do have to ask.....does Roy bend you back EVERY time he kisses you? That is all I have ever seen of you kissing and I am worried about your chiropractic bills. LOL!
We are all going to have to pray and ask God for forgiveness for our jealousy and envy for this one. Tell Roy we give him a 2-thumbs up.
Donna! lucky girl!!! it looks like an amazing trip! good for you! so glad you had a nice get away!
