Bless Her Sweet, Little Heart!

I honestly thought that the first injury we'd ever have to visit the doctor with would be for Roy Austin, but somehow Caroline now holds that title...
Last night before Caroline went to bed, she was playing with Roy and me in the playroom. While she was sitting on the edge of our slide, she suddenly fell backwards landing on her right arm. I comforted her and we made sure she could wiggle her fingers and put her arm above her head. After a crying spell, she finally fell asleep but then woke up several times in the night crying, again. I figured it was just due to her exhaustion because she missed her nap yesterday and got to bed late. Well, this morning she woke up very cranky...crying and just plain sad. She kept saying "My ohm holts". I decided to take her to the doctor. Thankfully Roy was able to stay with Roy Austin. I can't imagine the next three hours with him along!! So, after a visit to the pediatrician, who referred us to the radiologist (a long wait) and then another referral to our old friend, Dr. Frick, the orthopedist, Caroline is now the proud owner of 2 small fractures on her right arm and the proud wearer of a "Princess Glove"! When Dr. Frick told me that she'd have to wear this thing for 3 weeks, I quickly made a big deal about how she was going to wear this princess glove just like Cinderella and how pretty it was and how I wish I could wear one! So far, it's working. Now I just have to figure how to keep it clean, dry and smell-free for 3 weeks---even at the beach!

Caroline really does have a high pain tolerance. I've known that since she was a baby and had double ear infections and never made a peep! She did great today and I was so proud of her. Bless her heart, all morning she was holding her arm and fist up in the air because it hurt to lay it flat against her body. She looked like she was at a political rally. As a reward, we visited our hospital's Chick-fil-a for old time's sake and for a special treat.

Here is our sweet girl displaying her new glove at Chick-fil-a. Isn't it pitiful?

The Crime Scene.

And then when we got home, I asked her to pose with the splint. Don't feel too badly for her, she's pretending to cry in this picture.

Two side notes: First, I felt terrible for just putting her to bed last night, but the nurse quickly reassured me that if I had called in, that's what they would have told me to do anyways. Shoo! Second, is it just me, or does it get on your nerves when nurses, receptionists and X-Ray technicians call you "mom"? "Okay, Mom, if you don't mind filling out this paperwork.." or "Mom, why don't you sit her on your lap to make sure she holds still" or my favorite "Mom? What date works best for you to come back for a check-up?" I don't know why, but that bugs me! I have a name and I'm not your mommy.

Donna, bless her sweet little heart is right! I'm glad it is a princess arm brace - that helps! And she got a treat for going to the doctors today and all of that waiting! Thanks for your update!

Oh no! Poor Caroline! At least she's young enough for the princess trick to work! :) Just remembr you can bring RA here anytime, especially when it's an emergency, no notice needed!

I felt so bad for her when you called and told me. Seeing the pictures of her makes me feel somewhat better about the whole thing. At least she looks comfortable, pain free, and kind of proud of her little princess glove. As I told you....I did the same thing to Dolly when she fell on her arm doing a flip for cheerleading. I was so sure she was going to be all right, but in the morning, when she hurt badly, and her arm was swollen, I finally took her to the doctor. Yes, she had a broken arm and had to have surgery to get a pin put in. Did I ever feel like a terrible mom!!! I guess it happens to the best of us. We were never ones to run off to the doctor anytime there was something wrong. Guess that's what made you (and me) do what we did. Give that girl an extra kiss and hug from her old Grammy!!!

Something about that pic of her in her brace makes me laugh. Poor thing! You can tell she is proud of her new brace. It will be interesting trying to keep it on her and clean for the next 3 weeks!

Poor tang. :( I'm glad she's okay and will live to see another day. I wonder why they didn't put a hard cast on it. I'm assuming you can take the splint off for baths???

I LOL about the everyone calling you mom thing. That is something I've thought about so many times and it is annoying - don't know why, but it is. I guess they do it because they have to deal with so many people that it would be hard to remember everyone's names??? I kept thinking that by the end of Max's 3 month NICU stay I would be friendly enough with them for them to call me Jennifer...NOPE, was still called Mom.

I love C's face in that last picture. It made me laugh! She is too cute even with a fractured arm. :O) So glad that it wasn't any worse as well. Good luck with keeping it clean! Give her some extra hugs as well. :O)

Yes - bless her sweet, little heart! I'm so sorry this happened! But I am glad she likes her princess glove. She is precious.

And yes, I agree - they should call you something other than "mom" - you're right you have a name. (And it's on the chart!)

Hope Caroline recovers quickly!

She's too cute to get hurt!!

My daughter fell off the play structure at Dairy Queen one time (under my husband's supervision). My older daughter called me (I was at Target) to tell me that "Lindsay cut her head open and Daddy shaved her head!!"

And as any good mother of girls would say , I said "WHAT? HE SHAVED HER HEAD??" When I got to the emergency room I saw that it was just the wound site that had been "shaved" and the doctor commended my husband for having done so....She did end up with stitches, but we all survived! I was so glad it was the back of her head..and I did wonder if we would have a visit from Child Protective Services!!!

I hope she will keep the Princess brace on...and we will all have to pray for YOU..these things always end up worse for the Mommy!!

I am so sorry about C's accident. I know that must have broken your heart. You are crafty...why don't you Bedazzle the splint? Just a thought.

Give my girl and kiss and don't feel too bad Donna. I let Roy go two days with a broken arm. He was tough too but by the end of the second day or the next day he came to me and said, "Mom my arm really hurts!" Then big tears came down his face. Poor boy and sorry mom that I am felt terrible.
Love you all and miss you so,
Jane

Oh girl, thank goodness thats all it is! Our neighbor's daughter (1 1/2) fell off her slide in the backyard and broke her arm, she had to wear the cast for weeks... Hope the Princess heals quickly!!!

Poor Caroline! At least she is doing okay with the brace so far. :) Donna, I think Caroline looks JUST like you in the Chick-fil-A picture...oh my word!

Donna, I agree. It drives me crazy when they call me Mom. As much as I pay they need to take 2 seconds to look at the chart and call me something, anything else. Poor Caroline, she is so cute!!!

I'm so sorry that happened!! And I just don't know if there will be any way around the smell after 3 weeks!! :)

Way to go on the "princess glove" idea. I think it's great how we moms can think on our feet when in a crisis situation. That was a good one! I am proud of you for the way you handled all of this. Good job Donna!!

Poor, poor Carol! first off...did you feel like you had to defend yourself that she REALLY fell off the slide and you PROMISE you didn't touch her?!? Second, can Carol come to Central this Sunday? She'll fit in PERFECT!!! You've got a Pentecostal on your hands, honey. :)
