Back to the Prom

These may be the best ones yet...

1989. Karen Pierce was a freshman. She was new to highschool--not quite sure what to expect, trying to find her place. All of that changed when she was invited to the prom by a junior!! Richie was his name. They were in the same youth group and actually did "go together" for a little while. Interestingly enough, Karen still sees Richie at family events. Awkward. Karen says that the dress was a hand-me-down from her sister and she spent a lot of time on her hair. Really?? I never would have thought that.

The following is the progression of proms in the life of Hannah Parrish Scholle. From the looks of it, this girl was Miss Pop-u-lar!! She was a common frequenter among the proms in Boone and Winston-Salem. I think she may be our winner, seeing that she made a slide show and included vivid descriptions of each event:

Hannah Parrish's Prom Progression, from the fingers of the prom queen herself:

Watauga High School Homecoming 1989: My freshman year in Boone, NC. Holly Furman Jones set me up with Matt Kopp (sweet tie, Matt!). My mom made my dress. I thought I was a princess in my gold bodice and burgundy satin number! Matt asked me if he could kiss me this night (my first kiss) and I responded by just giving him a hug. Embarrassing!

Watauga High School 1990: Oh gosh...this was a scandal and I hope the Graham half of the equation has forgiven me. Ouch. I had just moved to Winston and Wil called to asked me to Homecoming. I said yes. Then, Mack Barr called and asked me and I told him I was going with Wil. Long story short, Mack said Wil knew that Mack was going to ask me and tried to beat him to the punch. I felt sorry for Mack and tried to make it right by telling Mack yes and telling Wil he should ask my friend, Natasha. It was all DRAMA but funny now (I hope...water under the bridge, right?) The four of us ended up having a great time and Wil was very understanding. Yes, I'm sporting a Jessica McClintock which I apparently wore a TON...you haven't seen the end of it yet!

Winston-Salem 1991: More Jessica McClintock and the introduction of my high school sweetheart/first love/puppy love...whatever you call it. His name is Jacob and we dated for the rest of high school and the beginning of college. He is now my high school friend's, Karen Morgan Atkinson's, brother in law. Anna and I liked to call is hairdo "THE SWOOSH."

Mt. Tabor High School Prom 1992: This was my prom (Jacob went to my rival high school). You can't see the bottom of my dress but it was a white ruffle number. Here's where I become the "BAD GIRL" of the prom challenge b/c I'm in strapless. This was my first time EVER wearing strapless and I think I thought I was THE STUFF. We are at Allison Perkins' house and she went w/ Jacob's best friend, Ashley Knight. Allison came down w/ Chicken Pox the week before prom. Embarrasing!

MTH prom 1993: My prom. I loved this dress and might wish I could look like this all the time! We ate dinner at Noble's for this prom.

RJ Reynolds HS prom 1993: Jacob's prom. I couldn't dare wear the same dress I wore to my prom so I borrowed this from a friend. I LOVED this dress too. My mom scared me as I was getting ready to leave and told me she didn't know if my dad would let me wear it b/c it might show too much. What about my hot pink strapless number?!!?!? It might've been a meltdown.

RJR prom 1994: At this juncture, I was at the end of my Freshman year in college and came BACK HOME to go to Jacob's senior prom. You can tell the freshman 15 was starting to set in and from the look on my face, I might've been way too cool for school and OVER proms. Notice the stringy fringe at the bottom of my dress. I think I threw this ensemble together at the last minute. Poor Jacob. This might've been the beginning of the end. We broke up the following summer due to my wandering eyes but still enjoyed each other's friendship and periodic company for the remainder of my time at Meredith and his at UVA. He's a good guy!

Next we have another Junior/Senior Banquet flashback from good 'ol LCA. Tonya Sorrells was invited by Tim Pafford. Here is her recollection of the getup/dress:

"1995 LCA Jr /Sr. My long navy blue dress with, navy hose, and strappy navy shoes. It looked simple in the front but that back was mesh with criss cross straps, to match the shoes of course. It had rhinestone buttons down the back. So basically I, liked it for its business in the front, party in the rear components. As I said, the slit was too high, about 2 inches above the knee, a big no no! I was handed the safety pin promptly when I arrived by the "Dean Of Women". My messy hair do took about 500 bobby pins and a can of hairspray but I loved it. I also loved the fake teardrop bling I purchased from Elephant and Canary in the mall. My date, who is now my husband, was a rebel, thats why I liked him. He went for the skater plaid bow tie and vest and changed into his Vans sneakers and removed his jacket as soon as pictures were over. Get a load of the plant on my arm!"

Ooooh--those are some good ones! Love the love triangle/high school drama story ... and the safety-pin story is hilarious! LOL! Scandalous!

Believe it or not, things really aren't awkward with my old prom date! hee hee! We are all good friends.

Oh, and there is a chance the dress I am wearing is a Jessica McClintock. I can't remember for sure--but I bet my sister knows. She had a bunch! My senior prom dress was a JM--as was MY WEDDING GOWN! No, I am not making this up. But there was no lace or pouf involved with that one. Ha!

Love the slideshow, HPS and Donna. I'm not sure I can compete with all that. Let's just say I was not the one the boys were beating down my door to take me to the prom. Anyhoo...I can't thank you enough for the invite, Donna. REALLY glad I made the cut!! Have a great weekend!

Donna--how long did it take you to do the private thing? Did everyone make it in that wanted to?

By the way, I also wore a Jessica McClintock wedding dress, but I had the PERFUME too!

I LOVED this post. The thing is, Karen, HPS and Tonya all looked great. What happened to me back then? YIKES! HPS, I LOVED your pink dress. You looked like Barbie. You're a beaut that's for sure. Great descriptions about your prom years. I can't believe how many proms HPS went to. Were you allowed to date at 13?

Great post.....Great post. Hannah, were you yawning and so done with the prom thing by the time you went to the last one. My goodness, you win the prize. I bet your mother was tired of buying/making you so many dresses.

You all cannot laugh too much at your dresses b/c they at least were straight. I was about 7-10 years older than you and we wore the "Gone with the Wind" poofy things with petticoats under them.

Did HPS have an addiction to proms? My goodness, I've never seen the likes of so many dresses and dates...I would have been so jealous of her in high school! :)

Love, love all the pictures!!

Good posts Donna. I should send you some pictures of my beautiful pink dress I wore in 11th grade. The girls now wear them for dress-up clothes!! They are treasures!! So sorry to cause such an uproar in the blog world. I agree with Dolly...you should either write a book or send a mass e-mail a few times a month to those who can't get on.
