Growing up in my family, birthdays were a big deal. When I would wake up, I would have a huge smile on my face because I knew my family would make it a special day for me. In elementary school, I would wait eagerly at my desk and watch the door for my mom to enter my classroom with a bunch of cupcakes for the class. Then as I got older and became too mature for cupcakes I always knew that my parents, and sometimes my sisters, would send me flowers or a bouquet of balloons to my school. I would feel so special! Every birthday, Mom would make a special meal for me and it would be followed by a nice party with a homemade cake. My family even has the tradition of going around the table and telling the birthday person why he/she is loved. Needless to say, as I would go to bed on the nights of my birthday, I would close my eyes with a smile because I always had experienced a wonderful day. But the older I get, I find myself seeing March 3rd as just another day on the calendar. I still get the early morning phone calls from my family and I get the cards and e-mails and more phone calls throughout the day, but something about getting older takes the "fun" and "excitement" out of a birthday. It's not a big deal anymore I guess, or maybe it's just the getting older that's not fun?! Anyway, this year my husband is out of town on my birthday. Sad, I know. I did get a birthday call at 7:00 this morning from him, though! We will celebrate when he gets back tomorrow. I did have a special birthday weekend with family in town and tonight I even threw myself a little birthday shabang with two of my favorite people in the whole wide world! Here is a photo montage of my 28th birthday weekend:
I also snapped this cute couple's picture. Apparently Chuck E. Cheese is the new hot spot for dates in Charlotte. I spotted at least 3 couples there on a date. This young man was determined to win a big prize for his girl at the ticket counter. You know, something cool like a hot pink stuffed gorilla for 1000 tickets. By the looks of those tickets in his left hand, he's almost there.
Then you have this mom who was into her skee-ball game a little too much. She kept playing game after game! I had to act like I was taking Caroline's picture to get this lucky lady in action. I'm not kidding you, going to Chuck E. Cheese and the characters you encounter there is a blog post in itself!
This is how I looked all night. A baby hanging off my chest, a diaper bag on my shoulder, balancing a cup of 50 tokens and another cup for the 133 tickets that we won, plus taking my camera in and out to capture pictures. Oh yeah, and holding Caroline's hand with my free right hand. Roy, where are you?!
This is what $12.50 will buy you: A butterfly filled with bubbles, a red heart plastic ring and a silver dollar sign plastic ring...AND the sweet memory of taking my two blessings to Chuck E. Cheese on my 28th birthday.

My small group just left our house and I'm just NOW getting to post about you on my blog! WAHHHHH! The day's almost over and I'm just now getting to it. So sorry! I love you and Happy 28th!
Killer post. So many peeps to help you celebrate! You had a great bday and partied like non other, where a kid can be a kid!
LOVE Jane and Cissie's faces!!!!! Anyone, in your company, when you have a camera is a good sport!
Just a couple more hours and your bday is over. So party harty.
BTW, mom is looking for you. CALL HER!!!!!
GOOOOOOD Post, Don DOn!!!!!!! I'm so glad your dream finally came true. LOL at your self portrait and at the hot mama with all the tix on skeeball. You've surpassed the blogger status. I think you're a tried and true photojournalist. I just saw on the Sammy's Purse site that they're hiring one of those for Darfur. Is that Mission field calling you!??!?
wow what a day. The blog picked up with the pictures, but you were making me pretty depressed at the beginning. I miss all the attention you get when your in elementary school and high school.
You forgot to put that mom looked like she was breast feeding. Maybe a good thing you didn't.
Oh and the mom that was getting the thousand tickets, she is teaching her young daughter to cheat!!! The girl is placing the ball in the hole every time!
We LOVE you! Happy Birthday!
Too funny that you were taking pictures of those people at CC's without them knowing! I totally know what you mean about late 20's, I still feel 21 and can't believe I"ll be 28 this year.I"m glad you had some good company and felt loved on your b-day even with Roy being out of town-way to go in laws! Oh, and the picture of Caroline sitting on your Mom's lap is precious. (for the record sent that card BEFORE checking my bloglines :) Happy Birthday, donna!
Happy Birthday Donna- this is Mendas little sister Chandelle! your life looks full and busy!
What a great idea, Donna!! Way to celebrate your birthday with the kiddos. I'm impressed you even tackled Chuckie Cheese with two kids solo! Happy Birthday! :)
Oh Donna...where to begin, where to begin. I am cracking up at you taking the picture of "meanie." You sound like a mama bear with her cubs...watch out...remind me to tell Max to be VERY nice to Caroline if they ever meet.
I'm glad you're SIL said the thing about your MIL breastfeeding. I just thought maybe that's how they do it up in the Appalachian mountains.
Oh, and thanks for getting me depressed...I'm 9 1/2 years older than you. Thanks.
hey sweetie! I think my poem said it all... (I mean, that was a real piece of art!) but, happy birthday!
i love the last picture and line of the post...so sweet!
Glad you had a nice birthday. You are brave, I don't know if I could have handled taking my 2 little ones to Chuck E Cheese without any help! Way to go, love the post! Welcome to 28!
Happy birthday Donna!!!
Belle was looking at your blog with me and BOY was she excited that you went to Chuck E. Cheese for your birthday. You know how to live it up girl! May God Bless you richly this year!
GREAT POST!! I love that you went to chucky cheese on your birthday! I know you made your little ones very happy. Glad you were spoiled by your parents and in-laws and I'm sure Roy will treat you right when he returns.
Great post!!! Glad you had a good b-day Donna and it looks like you had a day FULL of memories. :)
I'm re-reading this post this morning and I am mad at that little brat who pushed Caroline. I was thinking it's a good thing the two of us weren't there together when he did that. We would have had fun with that. (muuaahhhhhh evil laugh)
Dolly, it was the saddest thing. I know that I shouldn't get mad at things like that b/c C needs to realize that life is hard and she won't get her way all the time, but her face was crushed when that boy shoved her. I literally had tears in my eyes when she said she was so sad. Uggh, just thinking about it and seeing her face in my mind makes me sad:(
Donna, looks like a fabulous birthday. I will have to e-mail you my most recent CEC story. I couldn't post it on my blog because I didn't want my parents to lose any sleep, but it could easily have turned into the "Brawling Moms at Chuck E. Cheese Birthday Party" story I saw yesterday on Fox News...except that it would have been MFC's DAD not mom!!
I hope your birthday was as much fun as all the pictures made it seem, and hope your man is home safe and sound.
Donna, I am laughing at this post. You start it so reflective and moving and then switch gears on us and did a commentary on adults at CEC who need a life and bratty kids. LOL! This was a great post!
You did have a great birthday. What good parents and in-laws to celebrate with you. BTW - I hold you in awe choosing to go to CEC on your birthday. I will get round 2 of CEC when Olivia gets older but I have had my fill of that place with the boys. You were quite the trooper but it is a magical place for kids. I know you created some great memories for C.
I am laughing at the BF comments. I thought the same thing but wouldn't dare comment on that since Jane is the DIL to PawPaw. LOL! Jennifer, the Appalachian comment is hilarious! Do you use a wet-nurse Donna?
I am laughing at the skeeball lady. That looks like me at CEC. When I go there, I monopolize the skeeball lanes. I get in the zone. Don't you love those places. You will spend $50 in tickets for the wonderful feeling of winning that $1.95 toy. They get us every time.
BTW - Did you know that if it is your birthday, Chuckie, himself will come out and give you a hug? Maybe you can go back for your 29th if you missed your moment.
It looks like you made your birthday very memorable! Sounds like it really was fun and I'm sure that Caroline loved it. Happy Birthday!
What a great b-day post! What a fun weekend! Love chucky cheese's!! Hilarious!
Happy Birthday, My Friend! You will look back on this birthday and remember it as one of your favorites. A night with your children, a night to be a mommy, these are the days we'll remember and wish to have back again. This is what it's all about.
On your day, I hope you felt as special and as loved as you are.
Love you,
Elizabeth
Donna, love the song on your blog. Who sings this and what's the name?
I have your blog open here at work listening to all your music. Go BUBLE! It's getting me excited for our big concert in two weeks!!!! WAHHHHHHH!
Happy (belated) birthday, Donna! There were rumors flying around here that Roy was going to maybe come for a pheasant hunt??? I told Wes he'd better be sure to bring you and the kids :) It'd be fun to see you guys! It's been too long!
Dolly-it's the girl who sings a lot of the songs on Grey's Anatomy. She was on Good Morning America the other week and I liked her.
Erin, if Roy does that, we will definitely try to come up! I want to meet little Preston. Thanks for commenting:)
