Toss a Coin

When I was pregnant with Roy Austin, I went through a period where I was terrified of the "what ifs" of getting him vaccinated. With all the scary links of vaccinations of boys and autism, I really lost sleep over this issue! After much debate with other moms and talks with our pediatrician, we came to the decision that we would get Roy Austin vaccinated, but only 1 or 2 at a time, just for my piece of mind---even though our doctor made me feel a teensy bit silly. Anyway, I know that pregnancy multiplies worries, and after he was born (and after that MMR shot) I wasn't as scared.

Enter the Swine Flu Vaccine. I was talking to my neighbor last week about this--should we get it or should we not? She brought up a good point: this is the first year that they've had a vaccine for this epidemic. What are the side effects? Nobody knows. And she mentioned that it's made of cancer cells? Huh? Our pediatrician recommended getting the SFV, but all pediatricians recommend getting vaccinated. I just don't know what to do. We will definitely get the regular flu vaccination, and I know this doesn't cover the Swine Flu, but should I get my children vaccinated for that, too, without knowing the side effects? Give me some advice and your comments.

And just because, have any of you tasted this yet?:

Breyer's Chocolate Chip Yogurt. I had a free coupon for a pack, so I bought it and it's my new favorite 4:00 snack. They also make this in mint chocolate chip, which I will try next. This is SO good!

Hey there Donna! I have been thinking about you and miss your beautiful face. We are going to opt out of the virus vaccine. The one year I got the flu really bad was the year I was vaccinated...there are always different strains of it, but realize the choice is up to the individual family :)

I have a catalina for those yogurts from Harris Teeter. Maybe I'll pick them up this week seeing that you say they are super yummy!

Love to you.

Very thought provoking post sweetie! I do get my kiddos shots and put all the hub bub about it out of my head. But, hummm, the swine flu shot. That's a interesting one.

And, LOVE the yogurt!

Miss you! Love you!

THANK YOU for this post Donnie! This is my quandry as of late as well largely b/c they recommend for Toddlers (check...we have one) and Pregnant women (check...I am one). I'm not even big on getting the flu vaccine but I'm w/ you, I think we may just stick to that one. I mean, if any of us get symptoms of swine flu, you can then be treated if you go to the doctor right away. All those unknowns do scare me particularly since I don't know how it will affect AP and those two peas in their pod!

BTW, thanks for the yogurt idea. That sounds good even to me and the mint choc. chip might be calling my name. THat's my FAV ice cream!

I'm having a hard time getting terribly excited about Swine Flu, although the fact that there are more documented cases in this area recently makes you think twice. My OB strongly recommended it, but it's not even available yet, so still time to think about it.

Definitely consider the regular flu shot though. The people that die from the flu are the elderly and the very young and those with other health problems. Even if they "guess" wrong and they don't vaccinate against the right virus, there is still some coverage and it can minimize the symptoms if you do get sick...you can't get the flu from the flu vaccine, btw if that helps at all. We're all signing up for this one, even David who normally refuses shots, since little man won't be old enough to get it this year. Can I just tell you, Sara is less than thrilled!

There were some good coupons in the paper for your Breyers yumminess...I'll bring them tonight for you. :)

Donna, after reading your post, I am concerned more about getting the swine flu shot. As, a preschool teacher, I come home with more than my fair share of sickness. The only year I decided to get the flu shot, I was so sick and almost out for a month in total sick time.
We had a meeting about this at preschool because all of our schools around here on code yellow. They are reporting that preschoolers are the ones who are the most spreading this virus. Great news for me!
I am still up in the air about getting it. But I'm sure you do already, just wash your hands constantly and Caroline's hands as soon as she leaves school, maybe on the way out. You may think I am nuts, but I if one of my students even wipes their eyes, nose, mouth or picks a nose, then they MUST wash or I give them a wet one. I refuse to get this!

I have no idea......I am sure you young mothers and young pregnant mothers are really struggling with what to do....I will be praying that the LORD will make it clear. Who knows what is the right thing to do....and what is right for one may not be right for someone else. Love you ...

Oh goodness Donna, now I don't know what to do. Max just got the regular flu shot yesterday and I'm planning on getting one too, but now I don't know what to do about the pig flu one. Maybe you should do a poll on your sidebar and then I'll just go with the majority...real scientific method I'm using, huh?

The yogurt looks so yummy! If I bought this I would have to hide it or buy 10 packages of it! The kids would devour it!!

Not getting the flu shot...never do...wash your hands and pray!!

Dont even get me started on the vaccines and autism. I am in a tissy right now trying to decide what to do about Coltons Dr. appt next week. The doctor has been so rude about it when I asked at the last appointment. I think I am going to do the alternative vaccine schedule and just have to deal with the Dr. giving me a hard time. I did whatever the doctor told me to do with Adam and I never even asked any questions. But now there is so much to consider and so many more shots they want to pump into tiny babies. Ahhhh...what to do???

On another note, I am glad you mentioned the choc chip yogurt. I have a bunch of coupons for them and was about to buy some at the store yesterday, but I couldnt decide if they would be good. I mean anything with choc chips would be good I guess.

Hi Donna! Laurel has done quite a bit of research on vaccinations. So far 14 1/2 month old Jackson had not had any shots. He is a beautiful, healthly baby and I'm not just saying that because I'm his grandma! There are a lot of pros and cons and the decision should be left up to the individual. Just wanted to let you know there are some out therre who opt NOT to vaccinate.

Okay, I just deleted my super long post b/c I can go a little crazy about this topic, but thought I'd still post what we have chosen for our family. No Swine Flu Vaccines for us. As for other vaccines, I vaccinated my premature twins (now 4 1/2) b/c I honestly felt that I "had no other choice." (Plus, I hadn't read then what I have read now!) But have since spread out their shots so they don't get so many at one appt. (For example: If you look at the regular schedule, 4 yr. old shots may be given anytime between 4-6yrs...so WHY should we get all 4 shots(some of those with several vaccines in one shot) at one visit?) With my youngest, I have chosen to spread out his shots as well, but have started doing so earlier. I also try to make sure my little ones are eating very healthy foods... I like the idea of them having time to "detox" those chemicals out of their bodies...and not too many chemicals at a time.
Okay, I still said too much, but it IS a hot topic, Donna!

Donna, i post a video on facebook a couple of weeks ago about the scientists who developed the swine flu vaccine. They wont take it or let their families take it! Check it out.
