I'm Outraged!

As you know, I LOVE going to 2 specific consignment sales each fall and spring. It is honestly one of the highlights of both seasons for me. I get my children's clothes, shoes and toys for next to nothing and it gives me a serious high. Well, I received an email 2 days ago that said that the famous Divine Consign Show is on hold for the Spring due to a new law that will be in effect on February 10. Supposedly it will be illegal to sell any used clothing due to a threat of lead poisoning. What?! And with it comes a $100,000 fine or jail time if caught! Can you believe this?!

Today after Caroline's swim class, I stopped by my favorite kid's consignment shop in Charlotte. I asked the lady at the counter if she had heard about the new law and she said they are being bombarded with calls and questions from concerned customers and she doesn't know yet what they're going to do! Do you realize that if this law is true, we'll have to say bye-bye to selling clothes on Ebay, yard sales, the Goodwill, Salvation Army, consignment sales...the list goes on! It's absolutely CRAZY!

So, while I was at the shop today, I picked up some special deals (Charlottians, if you go by Kids At Heart, they're having a big sale!). I picked this little Ralph Lauren corduroy longall up for only $4 and it's in mint condition:

I love the Garnet Hill catalog. Their kids pajamas are great but they are way too expensive. I bought these for next winter for Roy Austin. I only paid $3.50 rather than the retail price of close to $40:

And my favorite deal is this one. Next Fall, Roy Austin will be sporting a new look. No more smocks and knee socks for this boy. He's moving on up to the more serious "all business, no play" look:The sport coat I bought on clearance at Janie and Jack for $30. Maybe a little pricey, but it was regular $98 and it is VERY well made. It's an exact replica of Roy's!

The shirt I got at Strassburg Children for $7 . The picture makes it look like a turtleneck, but it's a full blown mini-man dress shirt. And the pants--or I guess I should call them slacks, since we're being more serious-- are Talbot's Kids that I bought today at the consignment shop for $4! All I need now is a red striped tie and we are good to go:)

So, if this new law is true, run to your nearest consignment sale and look for good deals for your children before it's too late. We may have to do "under the table consignment sales" at playdates in the future.

I am outraged with you!!! This is the stupidest thing I have heard of!!!! We ALL need to write to congressperson and ask them to amend this law. Since it's already passed, there is no reversing it, but they could clarify it at the very least!

What? are you serious? I was looking forward to coming down there for the Spring sale with you. What in the world? I'm mad too!

I love the little RL outfit! RA will look so handsome in that....and speaking of handsome...that suit is so stinkin cute. He'll look like a little man for sure. All he'll need is a mini briefcase and he and his daddy will be twins. So funny!

I am totally in for some under the table consignment sales! What ever are we going to do?? AHH!

There is quite an online uproar going on--surely this will be fixed soon. It's just crazy!

Love the deals you got for RB--that last little outfit is adorable!

There is quite the commotion over this on the internet - There's no way this legislation will stick. No way. But...if it does, I'm alllll about under the table. I have an attic full of girls stuff that needs a home since Marion version 2 is a boy...but if there are no more consignment sales, then I guess he'll just wear lots of pink, because I'm not paying full price for ANYTHING :)!

Do you realize that it will also be illegal for friends like Jessica (and me) to sell custom clothes for kids, too? We wouldn't be able to afford the testing required ($$$000s of $ per item).

Well, I just went in full panic mode this afternoon. I went through everything my kids have to wear this spring/summer. Suprisingly, they really don't need A THING! I bought a lot last year after the summer clearance sales. But, I did scour Ebay this afternoon and I'm bidding/watching on a few items. This is making me nervous!

Obama hasn't even been inaugurated and look what our country's turning to?!??! J/K. Did you make sure to sign the petition Spencer emailed?!?!? This is a national disaster. I mean, our children's fashion future is at hand!

Is this law just for NC? If so, couldn't your Divine Consign ladies go over into SC and have their sale? Either way, surely they will lighten up on this thing. It will effect too many honest businesses that will undoubtedly go bankrupt. It just doesn't make sense. Girls.....shop now and get those used clothes for now and for the months ahead.

You found some great things!

I agree this legislation is ridiculous.

Donna cute post. I have a red tie!!!! It is so cute. I'll find it and mail it to you.

Surely that law will never pass. That is nuts!

I'm outraged too! I can't believe this could actually happen!!!

Jenius, I hate to tell you this, but the law would be in SC too. I JUST watched a news story on this last night on our local news. They interviewed a lady who makes cute little baby clothes/accessories and she said she couldn't stay in business if the law passed. This ain't China we're living in! And by the way, I'm not scared to write a senator or congresman...Lindsey Graham probably knows my handwriting by now! In fact, I'm sure he'll find a way to get on TV and do as many interviews about this new law as possible.

LOVE the little "suit" look for Roy Boy...so dapper!

Yes, Mom. This is a FEDERAL law. It's ridiculous and I honestly cannot believe that it passed through Congress but it did. They have said in various articles that they need to clarify exactly what it means, but as of right now, after Feb 10, it will be illegal to sell anything used that was made prior to 2-10-09 that has not been tested for lead poisoning. CRAZY!

Donna, On a lighter note, I love your new picture of Caroline and Roy Austin.
I about broke my wrist waving at you Tuesday in the wee school parking lot. Some lady I've never seen before finally waved back at me. She either felt sorry for me or thought she'd made a new friend...

I think it is time for all of you to storm Washington, DC. Take all your children and go to congress and take on all the dit wits that make such stupid laws. I can see it now......Mothers on the rampage! Think about..can't you see all of you and millions of others with the strollers ...? I am kinda joking......but NOT....

Donna- Go to www.nationalbankruptcyday.com and go to the top right hand corner to have an awesome pre-filled out letter and they will send it to your legislator. They are calling Feb. 10th National Bankruptcy Day!
I also emailed my local news station to do a report on it! I hadn't heard about this until you posted it and now I'm in panic mode as well!

What??? I'm in panic mode. I sell things on ebay as my "at home" job. I have a closet FULL of things ready to list. I must be living in my own little world because I haven't heard of that!

i heard Clark Howard talking about this yesterday on the radio. A lady called in freaking out about it. He said that the law is meant to protect us from the lead from China, but the unfortunate wording affects other things as well. His advice was that since the group cannot even monitor toys from Foreign countries well, it certainly will not start cracking down on consignment stores & yard sales. His advice is to ignore it. And to talk to your congressman.

Rediculous!!!! What do they expect everyone to do with outgrow clothes? Just throw them in the trash??? What a waste. But I agree with everyone else that there is no way it will be passed.

Donna said...

Woohoo! Deborah! Thanks for commenting. When are you going to get a blog?!

Thanks for letting me know. I bet a lot of people/shop owners are going to ignore this until they are forced. I just can't believe with the way the economy is right now, that they will force millions of people out of their jobs. It's too strange.

kristin said...

I don't know Deborah, but I looooove Clark Howard. I only wish I lived closer to ATL to hear his voice on a daily basis! He's the heartthrob of bargain shoppers everywhere!

Deborah is one of my friends I grew up with. She lives in VA.

My mom loves Clark Howard, too. Is he the one with the annoying deep voice?

Momofgirls said...

Seriously...in THIS economy they are going to try to pass this???!!!

They better make some new legislation to lower clothing prices in the retail stores along with it or we may turn into a nudist nation!

But, no worries girls! Remember, Obama is going to save the world!

Janis Reber said...

Kristin....and anyone else who loves Clark and can't get him on the radio. Go to clarkhoward.com and you can get his whole program every day....three hours....live on the internet. It goes from 1-3, and then Shaun comes on. When I'm at my office, as I am now, I just put him on and listen while I work.

Donna, I so know I am lurker, but this issue has me a little scared too. I read on a blog that we should all send a our best Consignment or Yard Sale item(kids clothing) to our Congressman. As that would get their attention more than a letter. I am planning to do so tomorrow. I hate for you to lose one of your great finds, but it might just be worth it.
Anyway, I still read, but am too shy to comment. Hope you have a great day! BTW, those little outfits are too cute.
