Funny Story--we arrived right around dinner time. The valet man was Hispanic and Caroline told me I needed to speak Spanish to him (even though I don't speak the language). The kids saw a McDonalds across the street from the hotel, so we decided to walk there after we got settled. When we walked in, Caroline noticed that all the employees behind the counter were Hispanic. When we sat down she said, "Mommy, does everyone in Washington ABC speak Spanish?" I told her that Washington was a very cultural city and people from all over the world come to visit or live there. Right as I finished saying this, a black family walked in and she pointed and said, "Yep, and they're from Africa!". Oh wow. I quickly and quietly explained to her that just because they have brown skin doesn't mean they're from Africa and that they were definitely American. I was just hoping they didn't see or hear us!!!!
So, what were the three of us going to do for three days in DC while Roy worked? Well, we walked on over to the National Zoo our first morning. It was a beautiful day with no humidity or typical Washington stickiness. I have to say, though, that Washington is not very stroller-friendly, including the Zoo Welcome Center. I had to haul RoyBoy in his stroller up and down a flight of stairs to use the potty and buy the kids safari hats (and at the bottom of the steps, I stepped into a nice fresh wad of gum! UGHH!). We had a great time, though, and decided that the best parts were the ape house and the snakes.

Roy had a long break in the afternoons, so he joined us at the pool. The kids LOVED it. RoyBoy was afraid of pools last summer but I think that fear is long gone. He was obsessed with jumping in over and over again. One afternoon, Roy let me sit out on the lounge chair for the whole time and read my book (sidenote: Francine Rivers' new book. A definite page turner....blog post to come!). It was so relaxing and gave me hope that my days reading magazines by the pool may not be totally gone:
This is what happens to kids when they haven't had naps for 2 days straight and spend the afternoons in the pool and sun:
After looking for Jackie and JFK's first home in Georgetown, we gave up. I didn't remember the address and I had a cranky 5-year-old walking beside me who was tired of walking and didn't care to look at pretty town homes. So, we found a wonderful place....GEORGETOWN CUPCAKE! Wow, this place was great! It's the cutest cupcake shop with tons of flavors, seriously the best cupcakes I've ever had. They were filming a commercial while we were in there, so we quietly got our cupcakes and sat to the side and ate and watched. I got the cookies and cream cupcake and it tasted JUST like an oreo. If you get a second, check out their website (click here). They have received great reviews and they ship nationwide. I think I may start sending these things out---forget Edible Arrangements!
By Thursday morning, hotel living with two kids was becoming a little challenging. It's hard keeping kids quiet, displaying good manners, trying to escape from the hotel room (RoyBoy), breaking up fights over happy meal toys, and prying M&M's out of noses (again, RoyBoy). So, when we saw Roy enter the lobby to pick us up on Thursday afternoon, I was one happy lady! We had a great time, though. Caroline said the best part was staying in the hotel and going to the pool. I remember my family traveling with my Daddy on business trips once in a while and feeling the same way. I'm glad our children were able to do it last week!

Girl, you are an inspiration! I don't know if I would have wanted to go to DC with two kids and pregnant and do all the things you did but it looks like you had fun. I remember the feeling of staying in a hotel with a pool and I'm sure caroline will always remember that too. Good thing the weather was so nice and I want to try that cupcake place. Hummmmm, August is not too far off. :)
This really looks like you had a fun time! It makes me excited to go there with the children this summer. And those cupcakes!!!! Yummy!
Donna you are a true Reber girl. Touring DC with two children, pregnant---yepper, no sweat my pet!
Great post, Donna! I'm glad you all got to spend some quality time together....even if it was a little exhausting and stressful. Traveling with kids is never truly enjoyable except for the satisfaction of knowing that you are creating memories for them and with them. I forget you are pregnant. Very soon, you are going to have to start the belly pictures so it will remind us that you have #3 coming. I can't wait to find out what you are having.
Awww, fun times! So glad you went, I know Roy loves having ya'll. Feel free to ship cupcakes our way anytime! LOL And post pics of you...we need to see belly progress!
How fun! Looks like a great trip. It's so nice to turn business trips into mini-vacations. We were doing the same thing last week in NYC. Tanna said to me, "How are we going to travel when we have two?" And I said, "Ummm ... we're not." LOL! I am sure we will, somehow or another.
Caroline...You are so cute and funny! Kids do say the funniest things~Keep writing these things down!
Roy Boy is so fun.....never a dull moment while he is around. Just sorry I didn't get to hang out in DC....made me sad!
Man Donna - I have missed out on SO much!! It took me a while but I'm finally caught up on your life - from Easter to DWTS to Wash ABC. I gotta say, Caroline's observations on DC's ethnic diversity is hilarious! Your craving for pickles cracks me up. I couldn't see Carolines recital video. Love the Big Bro shirt and it uneffectiveness. SO glad you are feeling good and doing well!
Donna,
I just LOVE your posts -- you are such a FUN mom -- and definitely inspiring, too! Loading up two small children, pregnant, and traveling on the road -- you deserve a medal! So worth the memories and time with family, though -- I remember times, like Dolly, with hotel pools and mini-vacations -- so fun!
Have to say, too -- LOVE the hats from the zoo!! Your kiddos are adorable!

Donna, it was so fun to read this! I can totally picture m&m's in the nose Caroline's observation about the African Americans, and YES - the stroller situation at the zoo in DC is terrible. Build a ramp to the bathroom people!!! You should've put those kids eating the cupcakes right in the commercial! They're just darling!
Oh, and looking forward to hearing about the new Francine Rivers book - the one about A Mother's...something? I haven't gotten it yet, but our pool opens this weekend, I can't wait to sit poolside and READ!
Fun, fun, fun! I really enjoy Washington ABC and hope to go back soon. Looks like y'all had a wonderful time and yes, Caroline will remember this for years to come. We would often go with my dad on business trips and the hotel and pool were often my favorite thing. Hope you are feeling well!
Hey Donna! Thanks for your DC update! Looks like you all had a wonderful time and took a lot in! I looked at the Cupcake website - those look so good!! Yes, good memories when I was little too staying in a hotel and swimming in the pool!
Donna, you are such a fun mom! :) And I admire you BIG TIME because I started sweating just THINKING about all you did with 2 kids & then being prego on top of that. :) I can hardly do it with one...but you make it seem so easy! ;) So glad you all are able to have those fun experiences!!!
Good Job, Mommy! I have had to go lots of places alone with my kids while Scott had his "Big Kids" to attend to, so I get it! It is so hard in the moment, but so fun looking back on the adventures!
Dragging Lindsay all over has certainly not always been easy (easier once we got her a BIG stroller!!) But, I learned real quick that snacks are the way to go!! That and a MagnaDoodle! Hahaha!
