I don't know if it's just my kids or if it's all kids, but lately I am constantly hearing, "
Mommy, I'm hungry". It can be heard after breakfast, after lunch or after a snack has already been given out. Trying to keep my kids out of the kitchen and helping themselves to whatever suits their taste buds is hard work!! I feel like all summer long I told my kids to get out of the pantry and wait until dinner to eat! Especially with this guy:

He is a true swiper, and this summer he proudly mastered climbing the shelves in my pantry. I keep the good snacks on the top shelf, and so that is always his destination when taking a climb. So many times I will come downstairs and he will run to the couch and hide in the pillows. This is the sign that he's been into something and knows he'll get into trouble. Sure enough, the pantry door will be open, a box of something will be spilled over or fruit snacks will be cut into with scissors. And much too often, I will find a wrapper for a breakfast bar or the plastic from a fruit roll up in the playroom, just sitting there on the floor...and I did not give it out to be eaten. SO frustrating.
In the past, we bought the circle-lock-thing that fits around the doorknob to keep children out. He mastered that over a year ago. So, Roy and I came up with a new plan...

I installed this thing during nap time and I could not wait to see what happened next!
It was like clock work. After nap time, he came running into the kitchen to help himself to the pantry. Yes, he is in his pajamas still at 4:30 in the afternoon. It's been one of those days:)
This next picture cracks me up. "GOTCHA!". He was so mad after this and pitched a MAJOR fit. He instantly fell to the floor and the fit began. He even said, "
Yours a bad girl for doing that!", which got him in a lot of trouble.
After explaining to him that he can always ASK for a snack, but I may say no, he pouted for a while and then a few minutes later came over to me and asked if he could please have a snack.
He is now watching Dino Dan with a baggie of proportioned crackers/fruit snacks given out by me and my pantry is locked.
Fingers crossed!

That is sooooo funnny!! I would have loved to see RA's reaction when he realized there was a lock on the door. Knowing him, he'll learn to pick the lock and get in anyway. Bless his heart. He's all boy....nothing wrong with that. Hang in there, Donna. You're doing a good job with him.
Maybe Scott could install one of those for ME and I would finally hit my weight goal!
Funny! And remember, Yours not a bad girl for doing that... You is kind, you is good and you is important!
Oh my! I am laughing so hard. "Yours a bad girl". Tooo funny!
I need to get one of those locks for our pantry door for Colton. He does the same thing and can figure out any lock or device for doors.
Colton reminds me of RA...at least from what I have seen on your blog. I may need to call you for advice and suggestions sometime.
Donna, I loved this post. I was LOL throughout the whole thing. Since I was there last weekend I can just see him doing this and being T I C K E D off when he realized it was locked and he couldn't get in. The pictures were great but poor guy...I kind of felt sorry for him. haha
By the way, I can't believe he climbed all the way to the TOP of the pantry. He makes me laugh!
