It's Like Christmas in July!

I was talking to my friend, Jessica, the other day and she mentioned how her children love to play with her husband's old toys at their grandmother's house. Her mother-in-law has saved so many of Russ' toys from when he was little and their children get to enjoy them now. This reminded me of the two trash bags full of vintage toys in our garage that were waiting to be played with. My mother-in-law recently gave us all of Roy's old toys that she had saved. When Roy Austin saw them in Boone, he was so excited that we got to take them home with us. Then I forgot about them and they sat in our garage for a good month.....

So, after my conversation with Jessica, I took those things out and started to clean them up a bit and I have had two happy children ever since! They have sat on my kitchen floor---for some reason, the kitchen is where they have ended up---for hours upon hours just playing with these old, but well made, toys!Last night, they had Roy show them how his Space Probe worked. Someone must have been fascinated with space travel when he was little, because there is a wide assortment of space toys. The cool thing is, with fresh batteries, these toys STILL WORK!!!!
It is so cute to see little boy hands play with and work the toys that Daddy once played with---sound effects and all:) It gives me a glimpse of how my sweet husband probably acted when he was this age!
This is off subject, but last night RoyBoy bent over quickly to pick up something and hit his head on the corner of our coffee table. It was a loud hit that I heard from the kitchen. He had an instant goose egg on his forehead. Poor boy:
Here's how he looks this morning. I sure do love this handsome fella:
Dolly, we call this guy "Uncle Leland". I think this happy farmer looks like him! He even comes with a tractor and hay trailer! Sweet Charlotte even likes these toys. Doesn't she look like a trailer park baby this morning? Bless her heart, she has a bad cold and her nose is so stopped up. So, she's had her mouth open for the past three days to help her breathe, which has made her drool like crazy. It's just easier to do the diaper look.
And here is Roy's baby doll. He said that when he got potty trained, his grandfather took him out to buy any toy he wanted, and he picked this little guy. Funny, huh? Dolly, didn't you or Dawn have this doll? I remember this from my childhood for some reason. He cleaned up nicely and now sits next to my first baby doll in the cabinet in Caroline's room:

Thanks, Jessica, for the inspiration to get those toys out and clean them up! And thank you, Jane, for passing them along to new hands. My kitchen may have toys everywhere, but I'll take it for the hours of quiet play that are taking place!

I remember those kind of toys and that's so neat to see your kids play with them. Vicki has all kinds of Leland's old toys at the farm and it's neat to see Michael play with them too. I literally LOL when I saw "uncle Leland". So funny! I'll have to show that to him. And yes, I have a little doll just like Roy's. Funny that we had the same one growing up. Was it a boy doll or a girl doll? Weird?

I'm glad you got them out after we talked! I agree, it is so much fun to see our children play with our husbands old toys. It has inspired me to save some of the well loved ones that my children play with. Hopefully one day my grandchildren will enjoy them too! I wonder if the ones made now adays will last like the ones from 30 year ago? I know they are not as well made! It was funny to me that Russ had the exact same space shuttle that Roy had and Caleb LOVES to play with it too!

Love it!!!! I guess there aren't many toys left from you girls when you were little. That's too bad. You do have your Barbies, and a few other things, but for the most part, they're all gone. You be sure to save your kiddie's toys. That's important. Another lesson that I would do so many things differently if I had them to do over again!!

This is a really cute post - reminds me of my Fisher Price tools growing up! That is so funny about Roy's doll - LOL!! Also funny that Dolly had the same one - can't tell either if it was a boy or girl.

Oh Donna it cleaned up so well....Can't believe it looks so good! Glad I held on to it....His memory is better than mine. Ladies, write down stuff you don't think you will forget but you do. Roy and Edward looked nothing alike as babies and toddlers but there are a few pictures that I am not sure of which one is Roy and which one is Edward...I am totally shocked!

Donna is that the same haircut he had when I left home? You sure got your money's worth if it is! That boy sure popped himself good!
