I am not a fan of Oprah at all, but lately I have found myself turning her on while I wait for the kids to wake up from their naps. Today's episode was about people who have lost loved ones in car accidents due to people texting and talking on their cell phones. It was so sad to see the families tell their stories.
I'll admit that I am not a cell phone fan. I normally never bring it in the house. It stays in my car and if I remember, I'll carry it in my purse when I go into a store. I am very hard to get a hold of on my cell, but when I do use it, 99% of the time, I'm in my car. I like to use it when I drive and multi-task--make doctor's appointments for the kids while I drive, return calls, catch up with friends. Especially when I drive on a trip, I like to talk on the phone because it makes the time go by quickly. I will say, though, that I never text.
Well, after seeing today's episode, I am going to try my hardest not to use my cell phone while in the car. In one split second, my attention could be altered and change my life and another persons/family's life forever! That is just so scary and horrifying. How irresponsible of me would that be, especially as a parent! Talking on the phone while driving is such a part of our lives. When I am at the stoplight at Caroline's school and look around, I would say that most of the mini-vans leaving are moms on their cell phones. We all do it!
Please watch Oprah today if you can, or just challenge yourself not to talk on the cell phone while you drive and especially DON'T TEXT while you drive!! I am going to give Roy this talk when he gets home tonight because his phone is attached to his ear when he drives. So, if you think I don't answer my cell phone as it is, just wait! Leave a message and hopefully I'll get back to you:)
Here is a scary stat:
For most people, getting behind the wheel of a car is the most dangerous thing they do all day. If you talk on the phone, you're 4 times more likely to get in an accident. If you text, you're 8 times more likely.
Think about it.

Ouch! I feel like I just got spanked! haha! I'll have to watch and see how it convicts me. Here's a question....what's the difference between talking to someone on the phone or talking to someone in your car?
PS. I can't stand watching Oprah either but I'll take a look today.
Good question, Dolly. If you watch, you'll see. When you talk/text on the phone, it's just not your hands that are occupied, it's more so your mind. They showed a video image of how your brain shuts out surroundings when you're on the phone and it was scary.
Donna, soaking up some serious television lately! ha! A girl after my own heart.
Did they say anything about earbuds? I wear earbuds hooked up to my iphone. But, I still have to turn it on and off after each call. I think it is IMPOSSIBLE to text and drive.
I'm wondering if you saw how GIDDY Diane Sawyer was as she broke in for the signing of the healthcare bill? GAG.
In July of this year...the state of VA is hands free on cell phones while driving. I didn't see oprah, but I'm convicted of it. How did we get in an era of being available anytime of the day?
Preach it, Dawn! Yes, I agree...why should anyone need to get ahold of you 24/7--besides your spouse and kids. I HATE cell phones...they're so annoying. I wish every state would do the no cell phone while driving rule.
Angela, I DID see Diane Sawyer and yes, she was SO giddy! So was every single newscaster and reporter. It made me so mad...it's like they were so excited to report it.
Good post Donna! I am GUILTY!!!! I don't text while I drive but I do try to mulit task and take care of phone stuff while I drive. BUT, I will surely second guess the necessity of my phone call after reading this post!
AND btw, I think Charlotte wins in consignment sales!
I did see this episode today. I am SOOOO guilty of doing all my phone calls while I am driving in the car. I rarely leave Rockwall and burn 2 full tanks of gas a week. I spend lots of time in the car so it makes life easier for me to get things done during all that time. I will think again and try to use it for emergencies only.
Donna, I didn't get to see the episode, however, did recently hear those statistics. When I drive and notice someone not driving well or indicating a turn etc. guess what? They are talking on their cell.
Off topic, but LOST was AMAZING last night....LOVE IT!
Thanks for your post, Donna! It's a GREAT reminder for me to be more careful talking on the phone while I'm driving & also NOT to text--especially now that I have extra precious cargo riding around with me!!! :) He is more important to me than any phone conversation...for sure! It really is scary....
Ouch! Thanks for the reminder. I find the hands free option on my car annoying, but perhaps I should get used to it?
Sweet girl, I thought of you last night as I was picking Maddie up from church. I needed to call mom and dad and went to grab my phone--thought you you and then had Maddie make the phone call for me.
It sort of worked. After Maddie talked to Mom on the phone and told her what I wanted to tell her, she said, "Okay, here's my mom..." Oh well, I am a work in progress...
Saw that show and have been "preaching" it to my teenager and her friends.. we also had an email that we sent them all that had the yuckiest pictures of a guy who was driving while texting and ran into another car, cutting himself in HALF! So scary!
California already has the law in effect but I see people just talking away HOLDING their phones while driving all the time....I am too scared to get pulled over!!!!
