Okay, maybe that was a bad title to this post, but I couldn't resist! Here are the pictures from our Poland Adventure 2009. It's a LONG post, so take a deep breath and get ready....because here----we-----go! (Said like the little boy in
Polar Express):

Here's where it all went down....the hospital in Gorlice, Poland. Roy was very fortunate that there was a hospital in this town because it was in the middle of nowhere!!

The view from Roy's hospital window. This is basically what we saw each and every day we were there.

This is the room he was in. He was very blessed to have his own room. All the other rooms had at least 3-6 patients in them. Here's a funny story about this picture...I took it when Roy was getting his first shower. I was aiming my camera to take the picture when a nurse walked in (who didn't speak any English). I pointed to Roy in the bathroom and she smiled and left. She probably thought we were some kinky couple with him in the shower and me with my camera out. Why else would I be taking a picture????

Bless Roy's heart, he was SO bored in that place. There was NOTHING to do. He said he looked at this corner in his room just about all day long and studied the different angles of the sheet rock. The yellow walls drove him crazy, too, and he now hates the color yellow. The yellow on those walls was a mixture between a scrambled egg color and a mint green. It was interesting.

I brought plenty of entertainment for him, though.

I even snuck him some Gatorade. We had to hide this from our translator because he was extremely strict on us giving Roy food. He thought we were going to kill him!

Here is Roy with the translator, Aleksander. He let Deanna and I know everything that Poland was famous for, including breads, soups, and cheesecake (inside joke).

Each and every time we went to see Roy, we had to wear these blue shoe guards on our feet. Here is Deanna, modeling them. By the way, I will travel any where at any time with Deanna. This girl knew where she was going and was about 10 steps ahead of everything the entire time! She was a godsend and I am so glad that we got to bond in Poland. Who would've thought?! I can't say enough good things about her....she is a saint and is so down to earth and real.

This nurse was one of Roy's favorites. She is obviously a nun, and she removed Roy's catheter. We were wondering if that was even legal?

These are some of Roy's other favorites. The girl on the left was the nurse who changed all of Roy's bandages and gauze strips. She was so sweet and timid and when I asked to get her picture with Roy, she got so nervous! The girl on the right was Roy's physical therapist and she was also very kind to Roy. She spoke enough English to be dangerous. The morning that Roy was released, she brought him this little ornament from her own personal Christmas tree:

This is the head nurse of the surgical unit. She, too, was SO sweet and she said it was a privilege to take care of Roy! She was always smiling. She kind of reminded me of a Polish version of my Aunt Sharon (anyone agree?).

Here is an example of Polish hospital food. Rice, some type of carrot mush and a ball of some mystery mush. Roy ate a few bites of rice. Yummy looking, huh?

The man of the hour---Let's hear if for Dr. Kapinski! This is the doctor who performed Roy's surgery and he did a great job checking up on him daily.

Deanna's and my Home Sweet Home for the week...the Hotel Margot. We were so happy when we first drove up and saw that they had decorated for Christmas!

Each day we ate at this little table because it was near a Christmas tree. We ate many pieces of grilled cheese and chicken broth here and listened to classic American pop songs:)

"
See ya!" Is it just me or does someone look a little happy to be getting released?! Here he is waving goodbye to all of his new friends.

Here we are in the Krakow airport waiting for our long plane ride to begin. I think Roy was a little nervous to get on a plane for 10 hours. No turning back:)
Cue "In My Mind I'm Going to Carolina". The next day we boarded the plane for NC and needless to say, Roy was happy. I looked like I had been to Poland and back, but doesn't Roy look handsome? I think gall bladder surgery agrees with him:)

This whole ordeal will be something we will never forget. It was not the way we would have wanted it--especially the timing of it all, but we are so thankful that Roy has recovered and we are all home as a family again! Thank you, again, for praying for Roy and our family during this time. We could definitely feel the peace and the prayers and we will never forget that!

okay, finally the long awaited post I've been waiting for. SO MUCH TO SAY! I was smiling and laughing throughout the whole thing.
1. The picture outside Roy's window looks like a Christmas card. Really! What a beautiful picture although I'm sure it got tiring seeing it everyday.
2. Loved the picture of Roy's nurses and him. Almost made me cry that the one nurse gave him an ornament off her Christmas tree. I'm sure they will never forget working with you guys. Very sweet!
3. I REALLY like Deanna and hope to meet her one day. She seems like the perfect person to have with you in a situation like that. Glad you girls had so much fun. Did I mention I'm an BIG fan of Deanna?
4. Laughing at Roy leaving the hospital and waving to all his friends.
5. And lastly...the pic with his doctor! Hilarious! You got some great shots! Good post!
Glad to see the Poland pictures! What a memory!!! I like Deanna a lot too and glad she was able to go with you - seems like a very savvy traveler. Yeah, I'm going to rethink painting our bathrooms yellow - I have a number of different swatches but I'm seeing this color in a whole different light! Thanks for your post.
Oh I have been waiting for this post! What a nice recap! Poor Roy. The reality of his ordeal...ugh! He must have felt so "bleek" until you got there!
Cute nurses. Aren't we so blessed to live in America!?
What a great recap. I love the photographs in the post below also Donna.
This post on Poland is very interesting. I am so glad you took the photographs you did so we can all see the nurses, where Roy had to be and where you stayed. Your travel buddy looks really sweet. God is good isn't he even when trails appear and I am must say that you handled it all with such grace on facebook and here too. It will be something to tell your great grandchildren about FOR SURE!
Donna, GREAT recap of the Poland ordeal. That sweet little nun nurse! What makes me laugh the most is that picture of the yellow sheet rock!!! They mystery meal balls make me wanna dry heave. I'll bet you guys were glad to have a good 'ol burger when you got home. Praise THE LORD he had good care and is home safe and sound.
Oh, that picture of YOU on the plane is beautiful! You've got that..."just fresh outa bed" look going on. :)
Roy, Part I...The Man who doesn't like the Concept of Blogs (aka no pictures of me; no personal stories).
Roy, Part II (a few years and memories later)...allowing pictures and stories of the personal life-threatening saga in Poland, days before Christmas, away from home, alone. Life is spared. Family is re-united. God's faithfulness is evident in the details.
Sarah Palin may have just completed her US Book Tour by bus; the Grahams begin their (yet unwritten) book tour in Poland! Your days of blogging provide a wonderful tool for you to begin Chapter 1, Donna. I hope to be in line for my own autographed copy!!
Thanks for the pics and updates during your travels. God is good!
Donna - so glad the Lord was so gracious to you both. You were certainly in my prayers.
Jason and I both read this post and just laughed and laughed!!
I think you should write someone in the catholic church to find out about nuns and catheters. :)
Oh, you know I love this post...details, details, details...that's what I'm all about!
First off, I must agree, Mr. Graham is looking mighty handsome in his sportscoat leaving the hospital. I've said it before, I'm thinking gall bladder surgery may be an elective surgery for me in the near future.
And my goodness, I'm sitting here imagining having to live in THAT room with THAT food...I need to take an antidepressant just thinking about it. But I'm sure you made it fun for him once you got there. Maybe Roy could do a guest blog post one day about his thoughts on the Tiger and Elin situation.
Love the ornament and the nurse who gave it to him...so sweet.
I'm not saying that hospital was that bad (PTL it was there), but maybe some congressmen and senators need to go to Poland and maybe they'll see our health care system isn't as bad as they say it is. Our hospitals now look like 5 star hotels!
Now, next time I see you I'll need to get more details on this Deanna girl...where did she come from, who is she, and when did she get her angel wings? Sounds like a great girl!
Good post Donna!
Glad you all made it home in time for Christmas. Hope the recovery is going well. Happy New Year!
Donna, This is so funny to me....The pictures crack me up but I agree with Dolly the picture outside Roy's window looks like a Christmas card.....You make everything so funny! Way to recap everything! I loved getting to see the pictures......Poor Roy that room was pretty bad! Glad you had Deanna there.
....and that was sweet of the girl to give Roy and Christmas ornament....It was a "different" Christmas for sure and that little angel will always remind you of this special Christmas! Hopefully when you look at that little angel you will laugh in the years to come!
Okay...my comment of yesterday went through without having the opportunity to spell check as the boys were all over me. Sorry for the errors as it should be trial not trail (of course) and there were other mistakes :)
Thanks for your comment on my blog. We didn't know the Ritz had the huge Gingerbread House either, but I wanted to see the lobby of it since it recently opened and there it was! It would be a lovely place to stay if you had the opportunity to spend the night uptown with Roy or even as a family. They also offer afternoon teas which would be fun. I hope to take my mother to it this year.
Oh my goodness!!!! Great post, Donna Reber Graham....great post!!!! You did a perfect recap and the pictures were hilarious. First of all, the picture of Roy holding the Gatorade makes him look like a prisoner from Afghanistan being interrogated. Secondly, the picture of the nun who took out his cathetor made me roll on the floor laughing. That is just too funny!!!! I bet she said a bunch of Hail Mary's after that. Third, since Roy was there for so long without you with nothing to do but look at yellow sheetrock, you don't think there is any cause for concern that he is going to be "penpals" with some of his nurses? You need to watch that boy since he is thin and svelte now. LOL! I do think after this encounter, you need to file a workman's comp lawsuit for pain and suffering against his employer. HEE-HEE!
What an adventure. That food looked terrible and you cracked me up about the picture taking..
The nurse giving Roy an ornament from her very own tree was the sweetest thing. Great post and great memories..
Glad you made it home for Christmas!
