When I taught preschool, we would make these every Christmas. They smell delicious, but be careful because they are not edible!
Apple-Cinnamon Ornaments
1 Cup Applesauce
1 Cup Cinnamon
1/4 Cup White Glue
-Mix together. Mixture will be very runny. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes or until it hardens up. Roll in a ball like you would dough. It may be hard to work with, but roll out on flat surface and use cookie cutters to cut our desired shapes. Lay on cookie sheet and punch hole at tops with straw. Let dry overnight. Once dry, insert ribbon through hole.
We made ours to put on my candy garland in the kitchen. They smell great!
Next, we made bird feeder ornaments for our pine tree outside our back door. This craft purpose is three fold:
1. They decorate your outside trees for Christmas.
2. They feed the poor little birds.
3. It's fun for kids to watch the birds come feed off of the pine cones!
We put white lights on the tree and then gathered pine cones in the yard. I put red ribbon around the tops and slathered peanut butter on the bottoms of the pine cones. I poured bird seed into a pie plate and let Caroline roll the peanut buttered pine cones in the mixture:
Once you are finished, hang them on whatever tree you wish! It's pretty in the day:
and at night:

Donna, you never cease to amaze me! you have so many cool things up those sleeves of yours! You need to write a book!
Donna, I can't tell you what a special person you are. You always seem to come up with wonderful ideas, and you don't just come up with them.....you DO them. With all you have to do each day, you still have time to do the special things with your children. They'll remember that forever!! I'm so proud of you.
Fun times! We used to make the peanut-butter pine cones to feed the birds when we were little. Except ours weren't decorated with ribbons and all pretty like yours. They look great--I bet Caroline just loved it!
Oh my goodness, I can't keep up with your posts lately...you're on a roll! Please don't tell Max all the fun things you're doing with Caroline...I still have him fooled into thinking that I'm a fun mom. Those are some great ideas and I'll put them on my list for NEXT year! :)
I can't wait until Olivia gets a little bit older and I get to do round 2. My boys are at the age where they won't do these fun, crafty things with me anymore. Those were precious days and it goes by SOOO FAST! At least, I get to do it again with Miss O. You are a good mommy, Donna G!~
Donna you are the bestest mom! I agree with Cissie - you should write a book "The Idea Book for Mom's" or something like that.
You really ARE a good mommy. I bet Caroline just loves doing things like this with you. I love the outside tree. I hope that PB on those pinecones don't attract some mice to your house.
Donna, you have great ideas. Thanks so much for sharing them. The tree with the lights outside is lovely!
Hats off to you Donna! I think the outdoor bird tree is gorgeous! Your mom is right, your kids will remember you taking the time to do all these fun things with them. I'm sooo making those ornaments, we'll try the bird pine cones, we don't happen to have a pine tree in our back yard like you do!
Great ideas, Donnie! I'll have to try out the Apple Cinammon ones. I've never done those before. Good, inexpensive craft! You're really getting on the ball for Christmas.
I was expecting a Christmas card post. It must've gone well?
My mom made the Apple-Cinnamon Ornaments with my niece and nephew while they were in town this week. It does make the house smell great! Funny thing.....they made these and had them drying on wax paper on the kitchen table. We all (Mom, Dad, Dakota, Caroline, & I) went to the movies that afternoon/evening. Well. after the movie, my mom, the kids, & I ran over to the mall and my dad went on home. He walked in and saw the ornaments on the table but he thought that they were COOKIES! When we got home, he asked what in the world was in those cookies on the table, stating that they were terrible! Caroline thought it was the funniest thing that Grandpa had eaten glue. :O) (Thankfully he spit it out!)
