Roy B. Que

This past weekend, we journeyed on up to Virginia to visit my family. Don't laugh, but Roy recently purchased a junked up smoker (barbecue pit on wheels) and refinished it to look brand new! He is so proud of it and wanted to bring it to VA for my dad to teach him how to barbecue (my parents owned a barbecue restaurant when they lived in Florida years ago). I have to admit, we looked like rednecks as we pulled out of Charlotte....pickup truck, two kids, a dog and a big 'ol smoker tailing behind. We pulled into Concord for dinner and realized that it was a race weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. We fit right in with the crowd. There were motor homes flying rebel flags and "#3" flags everywhere!!

Roy was like a little kid on Christmas morning. The night we got there, he said it was hard to go to sleep because he was so excited to use his new toy! The next morning, Daddy showed him how to prepare the brisket...

A few hours later, I opened the doors to the smoker to have myself a peek. Look at that smoke coming off of those slabs of ribs!

And check out those butts and that brisket:

Here he is himself, the proud 'quer showing off his skills to Leland:

It was a beautiful weekend to be outside, too. Caroline and Roy Austin got some swinging time in with Grandaddy:

And Caroline was able to take some rides on the 4-wheeler. This girl has a serious need for speed. She LOVED it!

Everything was so tasty and yummy. We enjoyed two family meals out of it all and everyone was able to take leftovers home, too. We'll be eating BBQ all week, I think. At least I know one little boy who will be happy:
As we were getting lunch ready on Sunday, I looked out of the kitchen window and guess who I saw?
LeRoy was back together. And what fun they had! Roy gave his better half a little lesson in archery:
Woo! Look at that form! Is he a natural, or what?!

I was the lucky person to be the arrow fetcher. Good wife, Donna, good wife.

Dolly and I also picked up a new talent this weekend. We got this great idea to make little candy buckets for Halloween! When she and I get together, we become SO creative. We can't help it. It's like our brains merge together to form these genius ideas! We came up with one and worked hard on them:
Julie and Jenny, I hope you're laughing! To be honest, Dolly and I stole the idea and made a trip to AC Moore for some supplies. They were so fun to make, though, and they turned out really cute:

This is also the week that Baby Michael is due. I took a little trip out to Hickory Winds Lane to see the nursery and it is beautiful! Dolly is very ready to go. She even has all of her bags packed!

Now this week, she can sit back, relax, and prop her feet up as she dreams about what lil' Mike will look like:

So, it was a fast and furious weekend. We left to come home Sunday evening but first had to fill up on gas. Gas is CHEAP in VA! Check out these prices:

So, if anyone ever needs a caterer for an event, I'd be happy to rent Roy out to you. I'm laughing right now thinking of Roy as a caterer!

hahah! I laughed at the picture of LeRoy back together again. So funny! Good post Donna. It was fun having you home again and it WAS a fast weekend.

By the way Julie, I don't have anyone to give my "Boo" bucket filled with candy to so I'm thinking of giving it to Dr. P for some brownie points...you know, maybe a better room at the hospital? hahaha!

Who's Dr. P???

Do you think your parents would mind if I came and lived with them for awhile? Their property/house is so beautiful. Maybe they could rent it out to Don and he could take me there and surprise me like Roy did for you, you think?

What a fun, craft filled weekend! I was laughing at you guys making those buckets - they turned out really cute. Dolly, fill one of those suckers up with more of that candy corn you sent me and send it to fat mama Jennifer. Only kidding because I have plenty of candy corn stashed away so that only I can find it. Anway, I digress...

I was thinking maybe Roy could cater the reception when Don and I renew our vows in Gatlinburg/Dollywood in a couple of years (10 yr anniversary). I'll keep him in mind.

Good post, Donna! Now the wait is on for Dolly to pop out Michael and Denise to pop out ??????...

As usual, good post Donna! Love the smoker - Roy should seriously consider doing some catering - especially with all of the big race weekends in CLT.

You and Dolly are so creative!

Donna, that was such a nice blog. It pretty much summed up the weekend. I enjoyed having all of you here so much. Can't wait till you come back in a few days when little Michael comes. The pictures were great. Jennifer, we have a little guest house on our property, and you're invited to come stay there any time you want. Just say when! How 'bout for an anniversary trip before your 10th?

Thank you for coming, Donna. Just thank you. ILY

You and Dolly did a great job on those buckets. now I am going to copy you guys and make one.

Sorry I didnt make it over to drop off the stuff on Saturday. I got tied up painting our house and didnt want to come over in my paint clothes. I will send it in the mail.

Roy & Leleand are such a cute couple. It is so nice when your husbands get along and have similar intersts, isnt it!

Donna,

That BBQ looks YUMMY! You guys will use that so much with all the family gatherings you host. We filled our tanks with the SAME $2.98 gas in VA this weekend! We drove to LU to see our son and we couldn't believe the gas prices -wow! I agree with Jennifer --your folks place looks lovely!

What a fun fall weekend!! I'm sure the BBQ was delish! Let me know when y'all are cooking some here in the QC! The buckets turned out too cute and way to be a good wife and fetch the arrows.....too sweet of you. :O)

Good post Donna! I loved reading about your weekend. Looks like you guys had a great time. I was cracking up when you were talking about it being "race weekend" in Concord Friday when you stopped for dinner. The very weekend I moved to CLT, it was race weekend and I remember thinking...WHAT IN THE WORLD HAVE I JUST DONE? There were rednecks all over the place. Then I moved to Knoxville, TN...enough said. ;) LOL!

WOW!! That is one huge smoker! I see a catered Sunday school event at the Grahams coming up soon!

MAx is going to be so jealous. He has been saying for weeks that he wants a REAL BBQ smoker. Where did Roy score that bad boy? Is Roy going to be a traveling Wilbury to all the BBQ contests around the country? This calls for a BIG ole fall hayride and BBQ. I don't know how the hairride would work but I'll offer up our abode for a bonfire/Q/Fall gala. You bring the cooker, we'll build the fire. Now, we just have to come up w/ a time.

Yeah, Dolly, you look like you have 3 months left to go. Sorry, hun, I dunno if it'll be w/ the moon like I was guessing.

PS. Jenius, I checked on your vacancy last night w/ Dolly. You just let us know when the current tenants are planning to check out and we are ready for a reservation!

Janis Reber said...

Hey, HPS, you're certainly welcome any time as well. This month is taken every weekend, but just let me know when you want to come and if nobody else has it, it's yours!!! No kidding!!

Girls, those buckets are ADORABLE!!! And Dolly, I think Dr.Phem would be very excited to get a bucket of goodies!! Do you know who is on call this week around the day you're due?? Dr.P delivered Peyton and he was wonderful! Yes, I'd give him the boo bucket just in case!! :)

jday said...

Jennifer, Dr. Phemister is the most wonderful OBGYN!! Denise and I both had him and I think Dayna?? Is that right? Anyway, he is great and (I think)he really appreciated my humor!

Dayna said...

It was a wonderful weekend. Thanks for coming and cooking the good BBQ. I would agree. Dr. P is the best OBGYN. I had him with three out of my four children. He's a really nice man. However, you don't want to run into him out in public. Last year after I had Wyatt, I ran into him the day after I had my 6 wk. checkup. We were both Christmas shopping. Talk about embarrassing. You just don't want to see people in public when you know they've just been "there"!!

Fun weekend! I love your buckets. I am going to be making more for Halloween teacher gifts. Dayna, want to hear embarassing, I went for a "check-up once and the assistant came in and she was a girl I went to high school with. I guess she was in training so they let her watch and assist. I wanted to DIE. I liked Dr. Phem too.

Looks like you guys had such a great time! By the way, I came across a picture today on the internet of a very young Billy Graham and I think your hubby looks JUST like him!!

i thought about dolly as we passed through lynchburg this weekend. we went up to DC. on the way back, we saw gas at a Costco for $2.87. I had to laugh when I saw your picture because I told my husband that $2.87 was worth taking a picture a blogging about it! Blog minds think alike.

Dolly said...

Jenny, I'm laughing at your story. That WOULD be embarrassing!!! Yes, Dr. Phemister is the best. I had to go to the Dr today to have something checked and let's just say, you can tell a big difference in some of those women doctors and Dr. P. I am praying he is there to deliver our baby. I feel kind of silly bringing him a bucket of candy so I think I may just bring it for him and the nurses together.

leroy? hilarious!!
i love VA in the fall! me jealous!
dolly, is that a "teecy" hair do? i'm so proud!

Donna said...

Y'all are funny. Well, I have to admit that I was going to bring a bucket to my doctor today, too, but when I called I found out that she had a baby?! I didn't know that! There is a difference b/t those women and men docs, but mine (a woman) is great. The best I've ever come in contact with:)

Jenny--still laughing at who came in to observe. I would have DIED!

Angela Richardson said...

Donna, you know what I love about all these family trips to Va that you post about? Well, I will tell you. Your family is the kind that people want to emulate and be a part of, even if we just read about it. It makes us feel happy!

And, your parents...don't even get me started. I don't think there are two more hospitable people on the planet! Your daddy looks SO proud of his family and I love how he gets in there, takes the kids on rides and pushes them on the swings.

The buckets are ADORABLE!

And suddenly I have the strongest craving for BBQ!!! :)

2 things:

first, we have an amazing recipe for brisket sauce. Shall I post it on DinDin? It is really the best stuff ever.

second, I hardly think that children in smocked clothing and an attack chihuahua indicate red neck-ness. I'm sure all of the race fans in Concord knew you were wannabes :)!

Dayna said...

So funny, Kristin, so funny!

Kristie M. updated me on your bbq blog update in BS this morning. I can just see Roy now. that is really cool though. Whenever you guys decide to do a bbq. Me want to come!!! YUMMY.
and time sure does fly. I can not believe Dolly is getting ready to meet her little boy! I am excited.

I am hearing the song playing in my head, "Endless Love" as I looked at the pictures of LeRoy. I am so glad they reunited. I bet they both were drawn to the smoke smell that each of them carried. JUST PRECIOUS!!!

Yes, your buckets are so cute. Why don't you decorate a few with baby stuff and put "It's a Boy" cigars in them and give them to people as they visit you in the hospital. Just a thought!

I agree about Jenius' home. Jenius, I think the next blogunion needs to be at your house.

Donna said...

Kristin, I'm laughing, too! Let's just say I felt like a red-neck:)

Suzy, we are a little BBQ'd out at this point, but when we decide to do one, you will be invited for sure!

Kristi Smalley said...

OK, I mean the bucket comment for Dolly but I realized that I was commenting in the Station. I hope you won't end up in the hospital, Donna. I guess you can never be too prepared so you might want to make up an "I'm sick" bucket as well, JUST IN CASE! Ha!
