Is "Austin" Cooler Than "Roy"?

A scenario happened this morning in Harris Teeter (yes, Denise. I was there AGAIN) this morning that has come to be normal. I was at the deli and an employee asked how old Roy Austin was. I told him he was turning one on Sunday and then she said "What's his name?". I said "Roy Austin". This is the reply that I always get when I give out the little guy's name:

"Hi, AUSTIN!"
I don't get it. Now I'm not one of those moms who gets upset when people don't call my children by the name I prefer. Seriously, call him anything you want. Roy, Roy Austin, Roy Boy, Buddy. But I just find it interesting when I tell people "Roy Austin", they just assume that we call him "Austin". I guess "Roy" is kind of old fashioned.

That is interesting. You'd think they'd call him by his first name if they were going to shorten his name. I think it's great to name children after special people in their lives!!

Have a great weekend!!

I will weigh in on this since I experienced this over and over with JesseRuth. Of course the name people prefered was Jesse. I finally just decided that to our family she was JesseRuth and that was all that mattered. I have always loved the name Roy Austin ever since Roy Austin, SR was born. Happy Birthday Roy Austin!

OK...I admit it...I AM one of those moms who gets annoyed if people don't call her kids by the right names. I never make issue of it if it's someone we'll never see again, but my answer now is the following: "Mary Farrell. She goes by the double name. Mary Farrell." That usually helps.

My grandmother's given name was Essie, but since we paired "Essie" with "May" I was worried that she would become "Essie May" which I'm NOT going for. That's one of the reasons we actually named her "Estelle".

Anyhoo...I love the name Roy Austin. The people you see on a daily basis will always get it right. (once they get it).

Tis interesting. Rarely do I get a "Hi Harry!" It is always, "Harry Jack." But I am one who sometimes calls Roy Austin, Roy Boy and me so sorry! I think it is because I call Dan Dan, Danny Boy a lot...then there is Daddy Boy, so I just say Roy Boy.

Like I said, I don't care what you call him. For some reason, I just don't like the plain "Austin". I dont' know why. It's not a bad name, I just don't care for it. I am partial to RoyBoy so no offense, Denise. No offense.

I Love the name Austin, but strange to see people call the boy what they prefer. and to go with the second name, hmmm. Its a no brainer corey and I will have a child named Austin, given that it is both of our names, so I would have to differ and say I love it! But I like it for a girl.

When I went to liberty, I wanted to introduce myself as Austin, but given that I had too many friends and an ex boyfriend there, they would have called me out in front of everyone... announcing that is not my name. I would have felt like an idiot. So, Cissie it is.

Yikes, Cissie. Did I say that I didn't care for the name Austin? I was just joking. I LOVE the name Austin! HAHA! I feel bad, now. No, seeing that the name "Austin" is a family name (Roy's grandmother's maiden name), it's cool. Most people see Austin as a late 80's early 90's fad name. That's why I don't care for it. I LOVE the Austin in you, Roy and your mom's middle names! Seriously. No joke! And I would LOVE to have a neice names Austin. It would be a cool girl's name. I'm LOL at you wanting to change your name/identity for your college days!!!

Veeeery interesting! Because when people ask me AP's name, I tell them "AnnaPreston" and I think they assume I'm sharing her middle name w/ them b/c they always say, "Hi Anna!" I wouldn't say "AnnaPRESTON" is that wasn't her name. So, I guess I'm w/ ole Chafin on this one.

I love the name Roy Austin, too. I love all those Austins, I tell ya. Jane Austin1, Jane Austin2 (CissPriss), RA1, RA2. Can never have too many Austins. :)

Denise, I'll admit I've always called RA1 RoyBoy and Wil Wilbo. But since, Donnie came on the scene and that happened to be her pet name for RA1, I've conciously tried to lay off cuz I don't know how I'd like other ladies calling Max "baby" (my pet name for him)....except AP has started to and it's hilarious. :) Sometimes I do slip. sorry Don Don. I promise I'm working on it. :)

I have spent my life trying to explain my name...Jane Austin Cunningham Graham..WOW what a long name. I answer to whatever but my name was Jane Austin. If you want him called Roy Austin I reckon you will just have to explain it like I have done for years. It's a good conversation piece if nothing else!!! When people would meet Delle Blount and me at the same time, then they were really confused when we told them we were sisters. They thought we had different last names.
The next time the deli man calls your son the wrong name .... just slap him. Just joking! Love you all.

Donna, that is so strange, but believe it or not I have introduced Liam to people and they call him William. Now, Liam is the Celtic version of William and that is why we selected the name, however, Liam is not William and Austin is not Roy Austin! I am sure you can tell I have had coffee today.

I have wondered about the trend for the double names....Roy Austin, Mary Ferrelll, JesseRuth, AnnaPreston....I haven't heard the double name thing much here in Texas. Way to be trendsetters!!!

People are so funny about the name thing. You were probably right about the name thing b/c it was such a trendy 90's boy's name so they assumed you were going with that. Just persevere girl, just persevere!! You could call him Ra-Ra. Wouldn't that be sumpin'?

I have fits with my last name...Smalley. Now if you see the word Small you say Small and not Smell or Smile but for some reason I am ALWAYS called Mrs. Smelley (HMMMMM???) or Mrs. Smiley. I don't know why people can't see Smalley and say it correctly.

I love double names but can see where you mothers can get the names shortened by strangers. Roy Austin is an awesome name and I love the family ties that are in it.
Didn't know until now that Cissie is Jane Austin....always thought it was just Cissie which is a great name as well. :O) I do like Austin for a little girl too.

Kristi, Roy's family actually calls him "Ro-Ro". That's how his brother, Will, said his name when he was little. It's stuck!

Kristi Smalley said...

That does it...you can have Ro-Ro and Ra-Ra.....and then you can have Ca-Ca and Do-Do (Well, maybe we will leave your name out of this game) LOL!
