For Big Girls Only

You know how every mom has their opinions on what TV shows/movies they do or don't want their kids to watch? For example, some moms don't let their kids watch shows like "The Suite Life of Zac and Cody", some moms don't like Rugrats (me included), some don't like Sponge Bob (me again). Well, Caroline's new obsession is the movie Sleeping Beauty that Grammy gave her the other weekend. At the end of the movie, a dance video comes on for the remix version of "I Know You" (you know the song...the part in the movie where Sleeping Beauty is dancing with Prince Phillip in the meadow.."I know you. I walked with you once upon a dream...").

Anyway, back to this dance video. It's performed by the ultra cool Pop group "No Secrets". They're so cool, I 've never heard of them. The song is very hip-hoppish, beaty, and a little too old for my Caroline. First of all, why did Disney mess with the classic version anyway? The first time it came on, I was in the other room and when I came in, Caroline (who is 2 1/2 remember) was copying No Secrets' dance moves and trying to sing along to the new version! I didn't like it, so I told her that that kind of music was for big girls like Maddie (her 10 year old cousin). The unfortunate thing is, the new version is very catchy and I sing it in my head and out loud ALL THE TIME!!!

A few minutes ago, she finished watching the movie and I couldn't catch the control fast enough to turn it off before the video came on. I thought I'd get a picture first, though.
Caroline in the midst of temptation.

Here we have one of the members of No Secrets dressed like the fairy, Meriwether, and getting down with it.

That is so funny! I'm with you Donna. When she was here and mom was taking care of her, this music video came on after she got done watching Sleeping Beauty. I walked back into the room and she was trying to dance with the video and I just had to laugh. She had a look on her face like she was watching something she shouldn't. It's just that you don't want her to grow up too fast. I'm with ya. Think of all the little girls who watched and tried to be like Britney Spears.

PS. I love how you did "some mom's. I bet everyone who read this will click on it right away like I did to see which mom it is. Funny!

Hi Donna. I hope you don't mind but you may not even know me and I read your blog. For one our girls are around the same age and from what I read they have similar personalities. The other reason is that I enjoy your writing... you have a great gift and are quite funny at times. Any way, I can totally relate to this as I am constantly trying to monitor what my daughter watches... hoping to prevent pre-maturing (such as the Britany Spears example Dolly gave). It is hard because "Disney" does not always mean it is safe for them to watch! Also, I had to laugh because I get caught with kids songs in my head all the time... the good and the lame!

p.s. I know Dolly, Amy and Teecy from my short time at Liberty.

That is so weird that they have that video at the end! I guess this is what I have to look forward too...only with boys! I agree, I don't let Alex watch "Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and she's 10. I don't like the way they talk about girls or the way they treat their mom. There's a lot of shows like that that I don't let Alex watch. We have succomb to Spongebob, though. We actually watch it as a family!!

Toni, the reasons you gave are the reasons my sister doesn't let her kids watch Zack and Cody--they're pretty rude to their mom. Although I have to admit, I do like Asheley Tisdale:)

Kelly, of course I remember you! Actually, I have a note/verse in one of my Bibles that you wrote to me when we did that weekend retreat at that church in Birmingham, AL w/ Teecy! I'll have to check out your blog now:)

I am laughing at the comment, "Caroline in the midst of temptation." So funny! Actually, I did notice she had BLUE JEANS on!!! That was your first mistake. Blue jeans on Monday, dirty dancing on Tuesday. LOL!

Donna, I know you and Caroline love watching Hannah Montana together.

Kelli, I just happened to think...I don't think I added you to my private blog. I need your email address so I can add you. I'm so sorry!

Donna, I don't remember that retreat in Birmingham. Was I there?

Kristi, LOL! Okay, I will admit that sometimes when I'm home alone, or if Roy's out of town, I'll find myself watching That's So Raven or Hannah Montana or (gasp) even Suite Life! They're cute shows, but for mature eyes only...not 2 year olds.

When I posted that pic, I almost wrote a note to you about how she was wearing jeans. Actually, all of her 'everyday' dresses are dirty. I'm going to a consignment sale tonight to stock up on more, though. Watch out for a post tomorrow AM!

I love the pic of Caroline "being tempted". That made me lol. I do worry even when Sarah gets old enough, what will she watch? Even now if I am watching TV I try to keep her eyes from drifting that way. Good thing Lost and American Idol are on after her bedtime!
Oh and I can't wait till tonight! Bring on the smocked goods. see ya there!

Poor Caroline...I know how she feels because I had to wear dresses all the time at Bob Jones. Never mind that it's 20 degrees outside or the wind is whipping her dress up over her head (now I know why all those BJ boys loved windy days).

Please tell me you at least let her wear a pair of pants under her dress when she plays in the snow? Kind of like we (me & Kristi) were able to do at our Christian school's winter camp.

Poor, poor Caroline...I feel her pain.

Donna good post. I know what you mean about the new Disney music remakes! I was taken back too a few years ago! I do give in a little. I have Suite Life, my children no better then to ask to watch that. We have also stopped watching good ole Sponge Bob, becaaaase Harry Jack was picking up way too many "sayings" and it was driving both me and Danny nuts to hear our 3 year old say them.

Now I must say, I don't want my children to feel weird, like I did sometimes growing up. Sorry mom and dad! But, I felt like so many of the things we were not allow to do as children were "BAD" things and I was a "BAD" person if I did them. Danny too. So we are trying to teach your children that things like Suite Life or Sponge Bob, even Britney Spears (back in the day, BACK IN THE DAY!!!!) are not BAD, just not our preference for them at their current age.

Yes, Donna....does poor Caroline's little legs get CHAPPED? Bless her poor little cracked, wind-burned skin.
